The weather in Germany is changeable and varied. You’ll experience everything from sweltering summer days to frigid winter nights.
German summers are usually a mix of warm, dry days with occasional rain and thunderstorms. Weimar usually gets more sun than the surrounding region. That means you can look forward to approximately 30 to 40 days of sun with temperatures over 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) On especially hot days when the temperature climbs to 35 degrees or higher, the only thing that helps is a dip in Weimar’s public swimming pool.
The seasons in between, i.e. spring starting in March and autumn starting in September, are moderate in temperature and rather rainy. However, Weimar is compensated for the turn in weather by blossoming trees in the spring and brightly coloured foliage in the autumn which transforms the town into a blaze of colour.
In winter, however, you should dress warmly, as the days can get uncomfortably chilly. The temperature sometimes goes down to minus 10 degrees celsius (conversion to Fahrenheit). The Ilm-Park, as the heart of Weimar, invites you to take a nice walk with the sun rising through the fog in the morning and lets you forget the bitter cold. The Thuringian Forest is not far from Weimar and is perfect for winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding. All German buildings and flats are fitted with heating systems and radiators, so there’s no need to worry about freezing at home. A time-honoured method for warming up in the winter is drinking a hot mulled wine (Glühwein), spiked with an extra shot of rum if desired.
