With competent support and in small groups you can build and expand your vocabulary and your grammar and phonetic skills. Main focuses are on communication and the use of English language in an academic context. In addition, you will learn insightful and interesting facts about the English-speaking countries, their culture and people. If you have topics or suggestions of your own, do not hesitate to contribute them to the class!
An international summer experience!
After class, you will have further opportunities to immerse yourself in the English language: our varied social programme offers many opportunities to connect with other Summer School participants from all over the world. Have a relaxed chat at one of our game nights, improve your listening comprehension with a free visit to the cinema, expand your vocabulary with delicious ingredients at our international dinners, sing a song at a karaoke evening, and more!
Our English courses are designed for internationals from the age of 18 who seek an authentic experience and real immersion into the German culture and language. Our participants come from all over the world! The average age is usually between 20 and 30 years, but all groups are very welcome regardless of age.
The language levels are oriented to the European Language Levels.
Please note: Our courses start at level B1. We do not offer English courses for beginners (A1/A2)! Levels A1/A2 must already be concluded for you to be able to participate in our courses.
(1) English Communication Skills: Presentations and Negotiations (B1-C1)
The first part of this two-week course aims to train specific skills required for giving presentations and informal talks in English: how to introduce oneself, maintain a clear structure, interact with an audience, use visual media, deal with questions, etc. The second part will focus on developing the language skills required for successful negotiations in a variety of contexts. The atmosphere will be relaxed and informal throughout, helping participants break down any inhibitions they may feel about speaking in public.
(2) English for Academic Purposes (B2-C1)
This two-week course will concentrate on written English in an academic context. The workshop nature of the course will encourage participants to produce short texts on a variety of subjects and to use them as a basis for identifying areas of difficulty and working on them constructively. The course will also provide useful tips on aspects such as style, structure and coherence. In addition, participants will be encouraged to develop effective strategies for reading academic texts in English. The approach will be creative and informal, encouraging participants to share ideas and learn from each other’s work.
(1 & 2) English Course (B1-C1)
If you want to develop both your communication skills and your English in an academic context, you are very welcome to combine both two-week courses and participate in a cost-effective four-week intensive course.
The Language Centre of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers language courses throughout the year. Our courses are tought by committed and qualified teachers who work hard to make every lesson lively, interactive and highly engaging!
In addition, each course will be accompanied by a so-called 'tutor': He or she is not in charge for professional language input, but provides organisational support. Our tutoring team will welcome you on the arrival days and accompany you to the excursions. Our tutors usually are students themselves and know Weimar and the university inside out. They will be your buddy and contact person during the entire four weeks and will help you with advice and support!
After successful completion of the language course, you will receive a certificate of participation issued by the Bauhaus Summer School. It will show the course title, the date and duration of the course, the number of contact hours as well as the main contents and topics.
Participants earn 3 credit points (ECTS) after completion of the two-week course (approx. 50 h). Participants earn 6 credit points (ECTS) after completion of the four-week course (approx. 100 h). It is necessary to attend at least 80% of the course lessons and to fulfil the required tasks in order to receive credit points.
Prior to your participation, it is essential that you clarify whether your home university will recognise the foreign credits you intend to earn.
If you would like to receive a grade, you must discuss this with the teacher at the beginning of the course! The fulfilment of additional tasks may be necessary.
