Which changes are undergoing former industrial cities, where manufactures and working classes constituted the basis of economy and society? How the raise of the "creative class", specialized labour and informational technologies are shifting not only cities landscapes but also their whole structures and functioning systems?
Revisiting urban utopias like the ones made in the 60's by Archigram or Superstudio, this Blockseminar wants to foster new critical city visions. Broke 3 will research on "post-industrial sexiness" through superposing Benjamin's fragmentary method of analysis of society with a creative tool box for reading urban settings. In order to apply them in field research an experimental excursion is planned. We will visit Leipzig to explore the Spinnerei project: "from cotton to culture", as they say. Participants are invited to contribute with different forms of creative thinking, i.e. through written essays and visuals (drawings, illustrations, collages, textiles and clothing). Intense interdisciplinary group work is expected, where participants will be directing and operating the different publishing departments: editing, design, illustration, fashion, production, fund-raising, and the launching event. As an outcome we hope to publish both a web and a printed magazine. |
