Waiting at HBF is a practice class in English for Bachelor and Master students of all faculties of Bauhaus University, with a focus on theory and methods of creating a (textual) collective art work in public space. The class is run in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn (DB), with the aim of installing the final artwork in DB windows at Weimar main train station.
Over the last years, collectives have gotten more and more attention in the art world. In 2022, the interdisciplinary art collective ruangrupa curated the fifteen edition of Documenta, by inviting other collectives to share their practices and creation processes. What methods do collectives employ in order to create a work together? In what way is an art work collective? We learn about this topic first hand from Reza Afisina and Iswanto Hartono (ruangrupa), guests in our class.
While focusing on and dealing with waiting at the train station, we work with text from various perspectives. How do we wait? What meanings does waiting have for different people at different times? Who is at the train station? How does one create an art work addressing this specific public? What are things to consider when creating art in public space?
This class employs the method of site-writing, developed by writer and professor Jane Rendell, in order to create a collective art work on paper. In what way can the experience of waiting be translated into text? How does one install text sculpturally? How do we work with text differently when text is a medium to create art? Students learn to work collectively, practicing communication across fields and learning about stages of organizing an exhibition, from concept, and communication, to exhibition construction and deconstruction, as well as methods of experience design. In the first part of the class we learn from guests and previous projects realized in the railway context. In the second part of the class we will work on the collective work and the exhibition at the train station, with feedback from our guest, the graphic designer and illustrator Christian Gralingen (Lette Verein). We plan to present our results during Summaery, too.

Die Lehrveranstaltung wird als studentisches "Bauhaus.Modul" durchgeführt von Natalia Irina Roman (PhD, Kunst+Gestaltung). Die Mentorenschaft übernimmt Prof. Dr. Frank Eckardt (Architektur+Urbanistik).
Natalia Irina Roman: City researcher, artist and curator, with a background in fine arts and public policy. On the last hundred meters of a PhD on the potentials for arts of disused railway architecture, at the Bauhaus University Weimar. Exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad, in mediums such as installation, concept art, video, photo, text and participative art. Worked for Berliner Festspiele, Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlinale and the Hertie Foundation in the past. Jury member for Draussenstadt Call for Action competition for public art in Berlin in 2021 and 2022. Working as an artist and curator in a self initiated cooperation with Deutsche Bahn since 2017. This includes the initiative Along the Lines of transforming disused interlocking towers into spaces for arts for the train passengers, kicked off with funding from Hauptstadtkulturfonds, as well as exhibitions, discussions and classes taught at Bauhaus University Weimar and at the University of Arts in Berlin |
