Making a Film about Water with Artistic Research as Storytelling Methodology - Einzelansicht

A Block Seminar joining Theory with Practice offering an introduction into the field of Artist Research (AR) as an interdisciplinary Methodology in Independent Filmmaking and the building blocks for making a short film (Theme: Water) with little to no budget. A key feature of AR in Filmmaking is that the narrative develops from ”process”, not ”plot”. AR reveals the innermost structures that build the narrative, whereby both the approaches and aspects of research become transparent. The author gets to enjoy this as revelations in their own creative process, while the public is ushered into experiencing both a perspective on a theme and the storytelling frameworks. AR welcomes methods from any field of study and is instrumental to form a collaborative bridge among disciplines and Bauhaus faculties. The course will conclude with a public exhibit of all student films.

No pre-requisite courses are required. However, course participants need to already be familiar with the audio/video recording capabilities of the gear they choose to work with, possess good knowledge of audiovisual techniques on their own smart phone and computer, as this is not a course for learning video recording or editing per se. Participants also need to be able to download apps for film editing for free or at a low cost (under 20 Euros), or have a laptop that they can bring to our sessions with their chosen video-editing software. Students who do not wish to be cinematographer or editor can also participate as (creative) producer and partner with a filmmaker in the group to execute a collaborative project. Roles will be discussed in the first session. Participants need to attend all 8 course sessions and hand in their course assignments for full credit.

For Bachelors: Abschlusspräsentation // presentation, Ausstellung // exhibition.

For Master, in addition, write an article about their work process.

For PhDs, in addition, write an article about their work process and a short peer review of a colleague’s work.

Students can choose 3LPs or 6LPs. Coursework will be assigned accordingly.
