”scientia potentia est ”(Hobbes,1668, Knowledge is power) but what about the knowledge that has emerged out of oppressive power? Audre Lorde reminds us ”For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us to temporarily beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.” In this moment of our history where it is important for us to ask how the history of colonisation shaped our academic practices? How do we understand colonial power structures in academia? Does academia in a postcolonial world have the authority to shape a Decolonial Future?
The module will deal with following research question: In a format of performative lecture series the `Decolonise Bauhaus´ aims to provide an opportunity to create and sustain decolonised knowledge-infrastructure.While appropriating Bauhaus as a site of investigatory pedagogy and practice the attempt for this module is to become an actual didactic effort and vision towards decolonisation of the institution. Starting with a collective definition on postcolonial theory and decolonial practices, and with identifying distinct legacies of colonialism across disciplines, the module is an institutional critique.
Didactically, we aim to create an innovative form of teaching: with architects, designers, sociologists, theorists, artists, civil engineers and others, we ask if it is possible to work with decolonial theories and methodologies in our academic life? The module address different disciplines from Bauhaus Universität and with the help of guest speakers, it envisions a participatory movement for decolonised education. The content and also the organisational structure of the module aims to reflect de- and postcolonial interdisciplinary thinking. The organisation team is transdisciplinary and multicultural anchored in the faculties of AU and K&G. We are mentored by Dr. Elodie Vittu, manager of the IfEU and Prof. Dr. Frank Eckardt, professor of urban sociology. |
