Artistic and Theoretical Writing Lectures
Lehrauftrag Prof. Darstellungsmethodik
Matthew Lloyd, MFA.
To offer and present lectures / workshops to the Master students of the Media Architecture
program, on artistic and theoretical writings. In order to facilitate students to gain a wider knowledge
and understanding on writing critically, and artistically towards Art criticism, theories, and importantly
towards their own projects. Which would expand and enrich their ability to write artistic and theoretical
statements, essays, and future theses. To fundamentally assist the Master students, to further their
confidence in tackling theories, critical debate, while learning to apply these tasks to their own
practice, which would help support and refine their own artistic and individual voice. While importantly
these series of lectures / workshops are to be completely designed to be complementary to other
Practical and Theoretical lessons, and the particular semester project. Where these lectures
and workshops would support and enhance individual and group presentations, debates and
discussions, of which occur during the weekly Master lectures.
Initial Input / Projected Output:
- Master-students will be engaged in lectures on analysing critical and theoretical text’s, of
modernist and current art criticism and theories. Students will learn to comprehend and
dismantle such texts, understanding their meanings with group discussions, and writing
responsive academic and artistic texts, and essay, while receiving constructive, individual and
group feedback, that would also be designed to broaden their contextual scope.
- Texts, statements, essays, and articles etc... that will be given and addressed to the students
will be in conjunction to the semester project, and the Media Architecture domain. As well as
important reading list of general art theories, and current art-world related topics and criticism.
That would become a constant reflective source for the students, particularly of addressing
contexts from the artistic, political, and socially engaging sphere.
- Master-students will be involved in a series of workshops, of which would be designed for
them to expand, enrich and progress towards their artistic and theoretical writing ability.
Workshops would fundamentally involve students writing response texts and essays to art
criticism / theories. Which the students would be able to apply to help develop contextually
and verbally, their own personal and artistic semester works and their concepts. In order to
essentially gain confidence in the student’s own individual artistic voice, and how to capture it
within the written form.
- The students will be highly encouraged to also bring their own influential artistic, critical, and
theoretical texts. Where group readings followed by opened discussions, students will be
welcomed to confidently respond and form critical questions and debates. To let the students
openly and equally become responsive to the given topics, which would support constructing
their own concepts, and importantly being able to precisely and articulately back up their own
artistic and theoretical arguments. While also giving students to delve into new territories, of
which could lead to new collaborations and individually different thought processes, towards
art, the public sphere and their own practice.
- For the 4th semester students particularly, there will be a separate series of lectures designed
for preparing them for their master thesis. Where the focus would lie upon gaining the
confidence in applying and responding to theory, in an academic but also artistic form. In
supporting Master-students to be able to focus and narrow on their artistic concepts, while
being able to place their practice within a current framework, and learning to broaden their
thesis works, in and outside of an artistic, political, social, ethical, historical etc.. sphere. |
