Minor Documentary Cinema - Einzelansicht

The seminar “Documentary Minor Cinemas” is closely connected to the other seminar in the unit Minor Cinemas. It focuses on independent documentary film-making as counter-practice or minor cinema (cf. the seminar description of “counter cinema”). Two thirds of the class will be in the form of an excursion to the independent documentary film festival Freiburger Film Forum, May 28th–June 2nd https://www.freiburger-filmforum.de/
During the festival, we will attend the screenings together and participate in master classes, as well as in public discussion with film-makers. In preparation for the excursion, we will read and discuss key texts on documentary and ethnographic film-making.
Please make sure you can participate in the excursion to the film festival at least for 80 % of the time before you choose this class. Travelling costs and festival tickets will be covered by the Faculty’s excursion funding. Additionally, there is the possibility of help with accommodation since the festival offers private accommodation with local students. An alternative will be a shared youth hostel room or Airbnb rooms, which we will organize together.

Study trip / excursion: May 28 - Jun 2nd

Written essay 12-15 pages. I offer the opportunity to pass the exam with a self-made short film or a similar audiovisual product framed by a written text building on the topics of the seminar or a video essay including a theoretical perspective on the topic. Each film will be discussed before its production with me and the scope of the work will be set individually based on the expected workload and theoretical depth.
