Museum Installations – Visitor Research and interactive Design
Interactive museum installations can engage museum visitors in learning more about exhibition topics, satisfying their curiosity, or simply having fun, ideally, all at the same time. But how do we best design for this and what is known about visitor behaviour and motivations to start with?
Touchscreen information screens and digital guide systems have become a common sight in museums, but there is far more possible, from mobile treasure hunts and augmented reality experiences up to tangible and embodied interactions that bring real artefacts to live.
We’ll explore the literature on visitor/museum studies and on evaluations of interactive museum exhibits, as well as take a look at the technology options for building such exhibits and the consequences and opportunies these technologies create.
In this seminar, students will work with literature within this interdisciplinary area of research (museum studies, education, HCI, design, ethnography), prepare and hold presentations, and submit a written report on a specialized topic. We further will do hands-on exercises (one per student), such as development of concept sketches for potential installations for a given exhibition/museum or mini-observational studies.
Note: this seminar will only take place if there are at least 5 participants!
