Musical instrument design and expression in the global, digital age
The speed and complexity of technological transformation can overwhelm, outpacing our ability to reflect on its meaning. Peter Kirn has been creating and reporting on expressive technology for many years, building on a background in traditional musicology and music composition. That has included both working as a music producer and digital artist, running the website CDM (createdigitalmusic.com), and co-producing his own product, the MeeBlip hardware synthesizer.
Tools today cover an extreme range, from providing push-button preset music materials to letting you write your own raw DSP code, and everything in between. What does that mean for expression? How do you define the relationship between the user's input and an instrument's creators'? How do we define the parameters of instrument design, now that machines govern not only performance but composition? How do artists set creative limits for themselves, and how do they abuse the limits given them by the tools they use? How are cultural ideas embedded in objects, and how do those notions relate to our globalized world? Whether examining unique object like the Marble Machine or the interface on an iPhone app, we'll consider these questions and their impact on expression and musical thought today. |
