The seminar provides a systematic overview of major authors and theories in the western tradition of philosophy of art, including film/video, performance, dance and music and other non fine art forms. Starting from Ancient Greek Philosophy (Plato, Aristotle) the seminar highlights Scottish and English Empiricism (e.g. Hume) and German Idealism (Kant, Schiller, Hegel). The main focus is on 20th century philosophies of art, particularly Critical Theory (Adorno) and Analytical Philosophy (Danto, N. Goodman), and on issues in today’s philosophies of art, e.g. the question of contemporariness (‚what is contemporary art?’), recent scholarship on the political role of Biennials or the relationship between performance and video art. The seminar addresses advanced students (both international students and German native speakers) with good, i.e. more than basic, English language skills.
