»There are people right there. There are faces that are no longer to be found in the city centre today, and that can only be seen far beyond the outer ring road. There is a learned and independent bourgeoisie, which still believed in culture as a fundamental asset. There is a timeless elegance, devoid of vulgarity. There is dignity. There is a different lighting and, above all, a softer light.
So the quiver we fell when we study Cerati's photos, to which even those who – like me – did not live through those years are not insensitive, is not just one of nostalgia for nobler times, or times that seem nobler to us. It is also the promise of a future, of renewed sobriety, of a beauty that is not flaunted yet which is full of meaning, of places that are not only consumed but also used to pause, to congregate, to express dissent, to rejoice, to enjoy what is there for all. This aesthetic and civic heritage is priceless, and for this very reason it should not be distorted: mitigating anxiety about the future with an authentic awareness of that Milan means rediscovering a model and breathing new life into an urban identity.«
