Inhalt
Beschreibung

Art and Train is a practice class – in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn (DB) – on theory and methods of researching the aesthetics of train travel and the unexplored potential of disused railway architecture. This class takes place both on university campus and on regional trains. Structured on three blocks – theory, train travel (a few days in May), and exhibition (a few days in June) – the class invites students of all disciplines to learn about methods of transforming own train journeys into works of art and to present it in a public exhibition.

The students travel by regional trains through Thuringia and visit disused interlocking towers of DB, while documenting the travels and the waiting in stations, with the purpose of transforming these experiences into own works of art. Interlocking towers and railway travels are looked at from different perspectives, among which, architectural, historical, technical and artistic. Students apply various means of documentation such as photo, video, sound recording, drawing or text; they also learn about various art projects in the railway context, about methods of transforming the train passengers into an art public and about practices of space-making. Students gain access to disused former towers from Thuringia, and have the extraordinary opportunity to experience such spaces. Additionally, this class offers the opportunity to learn about cooperations outside of the art world.

Literatur

Among others, extracts of “Poetics of Space” (Bachelard), “Site-specific art and locational identity” (Kwon), “Heterotopia” (Foucault), “Railway Journey” (Schivelbusch), “Railway Architecture” (Kubinszky).

Bemerkung

The course is conducted as a "Bauhaus.Module" by Natalia Irina Roman (artist, curator and city researcher, www.nataliairinaroman.eu). The mentorship lies with Prof. Frank Eckardt (A+U).

The class includes guests, such as art practitioners in the railway context and designers. Students will receive individual guidance in between the blocks, covering both the creative process and presentation techniques.

The blocks in May and June are planned in presence and the individual guidance is planned digitally.

The exhibition will take place in the university campus, with the opening set for the 11th of June, 16 O'clock. 11th of June is also the presentation day.

You can contact the lecturer at site.specific.ideas(at)gmail.com

Voraussetzungen

The students need to be familiar with documentation techniques (photo, video, drawing, sound recording or writing – this list is open), since this class is about applying such techniques to the railway context. The class language is English, but you can also opt for individual guidance in German.

Leistungsnachweis

Presentation and public exhibition for 6 ECTS.

Zielgruppe

The course is conducted as a students’ ”Bauhaus.Module” and open to all Master and advanced Bachelor students of the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design, and Media. Before registering, please consult your academic advisor and clarify whether this course can be credited to your curriculum. If required, you can conclude a learning agreement before the start of the course.
