The media arts and filmmaking course is designed to expand perspectives on the questions "What is nature? How can it be felt? How can we communicate with it? What is the Nature inside of us? What is the Nature outside of us? How are they united throught the senses? How can we switch perspectives away from antropocentrism? To help answer these questions, both practice and theory intertwine. Artistic activities arise from experimentation with various media and formats and from reading provided texts on the subjects of indigenous philosophies and ontology, symmetrical anthropology, haptic cinema film theory, sensory ethnography, autoethnography, cultural studies, media philosophy. The reading exercises are relational following a pedagogical protocol developed at Harvard University by Prof. Doris Sommer and her colleagues, called Pre-Texts, which stimulates literacy, innovation and socio-political awareness. In each 2-hour session, I propose an artistic activity with which to produce materials that contribute to the filmmaking process. Participants can also propose activities. Our films then develop from process, no plot. This creative process focusing on the theme of Nature Inside/Outisde is cathartic, allowing us to share our backgrounds, knowledge and storytelling skills through artistic activities. We conclude by showing our artworks and films as a group in the Bauhaus Summaery, July 2022.

Mandatory: The Falling Sky by Davi Kopenawa Yanomami/Bruce Albert.

Plus suggested chapters from The Relative Native by E. Viveiros de Castro; Sense and Sensation, ed. David Howes; The Tactile Eye by Jennifer M. Barker; Film als Sculpture? by Angela Lammert.

All will be provided as PDFs in Moodle.

The course is conducted as a students' "Bauhaus.Module" by Vanessa Ramos Velasquez (K+G). The mentorship lies with Prof. Jakob Hüfner (K+G).

To have at least basic skills in filmmaking and editing as this is not an introduction course.

The 2-hour sessions are vital to understanding the course methodolgy and to produce the necessary artistic pieces that will integrate your films. Missing a session impacts the quality of your overall work. The longer workshop sessions ensure you accomplish the film. Therefore, missing a session impacts your timely delivery. All must participate in the Summaery SoSe (July 2022) as a group.

The course is conducted as a students’ »Bauhaus.Modules« and open to all Bachelor and Master students of the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design, and Media. Before registering, please consult your academic advisor and clarify whether this course can be credited to your curriculum. If required, you can conclude a learning agreement before the start of the course.
