Beschreibung

Urban planning has long been focussed on providing approaches for sectoral planning. In the line of a modernist understanding of a seperation of functions, city planning has been specialized by looking at the city from different fields of urban life. This way, the development of urban planning followed a seperation of functions in society where the economy, mobility, social life, housing and recreation were viewed as areas of their own importance and understanding. Only in recent times, this approach has been challenged by a return to more holistic approaches which were putting the interferences of all parts of the city to the foreground of planning. Apparently, everything that is planned in one sector of the city affects other dimensions of urban life.

Especially in Europe, holistic approaches have been argued for in a prominent way. They found their way in the so called Leipzig Charta for the renaissance of European planning and EU programmes and institutions like URBACT are strongly supporting ideas and project which are following an integrated approach in urban planning.

In this project, the integrated approach of urban planning will be studied and researched upon in detail and in an international comparasion. Firstly, the project will inform itself about the different ways this approach is realized in different international context. Secondly, it will have a closer look on the situation in Germany, where the so called „Integrierte Stadtentwicklungskonzepte” (ISEK) are generally accepted in urban planning praxis. Thirdly, the project will look on how this approach is working on the ground. A huge part of the project (as far as the pandemy allows) will take place in the city of Altenburg. Here, we will work together with the „Integratives Zentrum Futura e.V.” which is working with a participatory project in this regard.

This project will be realized in cooperation with two European partners. It will enable exchange with students and lectures at the University of Krakow and the University of Latvia. Both are working on similiar projects in their home country. The exchange will take place mainly online, although (if the pandemy allows) there is some financial support from the „Stiftung für deutsch-polnische Zusammenarbeit” (German polish foundation for cooperation) available for excursions.
