Beschreibung
UPDATED FORMAT

This workshop forms the second part of the course "Academic Writing." Like the first part, it will be offered in an online, videoconferencing format due to the ongoing restrictions. As such, it replaces the originally planned face-to-face course, but will, nonetheless, cover the same content and use the same approach as the in-class workshop (see below).

This second part continues and concludes the work of the first part, but can definitely also be taken independently if you did not attend the first part three weeks earlier. The focus of this part is on issues of language and style that become relevant while drafting and revising any piece of academic writing. We will look at how paragraphs and sentences should be constructed – both to give your texts an academic and professional form and to make them appealing and effective for your readers.

Topics of Part 2:

drafting well-focused paragraphs;

developing paragraphs effectively;

recognizing the adequate functions of a paragraph;

applying the stylistic conventions of academic writing;

using the first person ("we" and "I") properly;

writing clear and concise sentences in English;

making effective syntactical and rhetorical choices;

employing nouns to express meaning precisely;

avoiding typical (non-native-speaker) grammatical mistakes and pitfalls;

connecting sentences and linking ideas to make a text flow well.

To provide the best possible conditions, the workshop is split into four online sessions throughout consecutive days. We will communicate with each other in a virtual courseroom through a videoconferencing application (most likely Adobe Connect). Other than a stable internet connection and a device (such as a PC, notebook, tablet, or mobile phone) with a current browser version and sound output, you will not need any special equipment. Thus, you can easily attend the course from home – in fact, from anywhere in the world! All further information will be provided before the start of the course.

In addition to the online course meetings, you will get the opportunity to receive (peer and expert) feedback on one of your own pieces of academic writing. For that, you are asked to submit a writing sample (e.g., an introduction to a paper or proposal, an abstract, and/or any other type of academic text of yours). This can be at any stage of the writing process, including a rough draft or outline. You will receive further information on how to submit your text in due time before the beginning of the course.

Registration Deadline: 29 May 2020
Instructor: Frank Lauterbach
Date & Time: 10., 11., 12. & 13.
