engl. Beschreibung/ Kurzkommentar |
The theoretical module is situated within the context of the overall theme of the MFA course accompanying the centenary of the bauhaus.
Referring from afar to Freud’s Civilization and its Discontents the focus of the theoretical module within this semester addresses the aftermath of modernity and its claim for purity, perfection of form and design for a better life. Under the horizon of an ever more unsettling present and its disrupting experiences the seminar will question utopian believes considering different critical perspectives from the postwar period on through postmodernity until today. The counter-utopian and counter-cultural concepts of failure, entropy, decay, the ruin, standstill and the allegory as well as notions of creolization, the global versus the particular, the public versus the private sphere, changing concepts of subjectivity and the self are just some of the many aspects, that had been at the center of the discourses within the workshops initiated in the winter semester, and which will be the scope for further investigation. And finally: Which role do conceptualizations of the beholder and hence the agent, does “performance” and performativity play within this “theater” resp. framework that late modernity provides or in other words predetermines – either in daily life (private and public), the social or within institutional settings like the museum?
The theoretical course will be possibly accompanied by visits of some museums possibly related to the Bauhaus year and a discussion of contents (actual exhibitions) and exhibition displays of the selected museums. |
