The Graduate Seminar Methods Carousel & Methods Clinic [MCC] is offered to students of the PhD Programme in Art and Design. The aim of the seminar is to provide a discursive space for reflection and hands-on advice about how to select and discard, choose and combine diverse research methods within the context of interdisciplinary research and dissertation writing. The seminar is designed to bring together different sets of expertise: Jun.-Prof. Alexandra Toland will provide practical insight and guidance with regards to theories of interdisciplinarity and artistic research methods; Jun.-Prof. Jan Willmann will give input on state of the art design methodologies; and Dr. Friederike Landau will give insight into social scientific methods frequently used by artist-researchers. The instructors will facilitate the sharing of experiences, skills, surprises, fears and failures in research projects to initialize a collective methodological reflection in the face of ‘wicked’ and complex research conditions. In this sense, the seminar is designed to provide a safe space to discuss both the ambitions, idea(l)s and potential fallacies engrained in conducting research. |
