Qualitative Research in HCI – Qualitative Data Analysis

This is an advanced project for qualitative research in HCI, with focus on training how to analyse qualitative data. For your recap and deeper understanding, we start at the beginning of the research process. We will discuss questions such as: What is qualitative research and what is it good for? How do we design a qualitative study and how do research questions guide us? What data collection methods do exist and which one to choose?

We will then introduce you to a professional data analysis software and provide you different types of sample material for learning-by doing. For this, we will deliberate the underlying research questions, review and discuss the coding plan, and cross-compare our data analysis.

At the end, your task will be to conceptualize and conduct your own qualitative research project. This might be for an existing prototype you have developed earlier or in parallel, or for an existing product, or students who will start their thesis work soon can also do some pre-studies on a certain topic they are interested in.

Basic knowledge in HCI research (e.g. you have attended the introductory Bachelor lecture of Prof. Hornecker), that means you are familiar with basic research terms and different evaluation methods.

Attending regular project meetings, active participation in discussion and discourse development, conducting a self-organized and self-managed research project during the term, final documentation of your process and research project.
