Das Seminar stellt Kulturtechniken der Informationsverarbeitung ins Zentrum. Gefragt wird damit nicht allein nach einer Mediengeschichte 'des Computers', sondern nach den Genealogien material und infrastrukturell bedingter Praktiken und Technologien des Rechnens, was die Betrachtung der Relation von Hardware und Software, die Aushandlung von Standards, aber auch die Etablierung von Institutionen und wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (wie etwa der Statistik) einschließt. Diskutiert werden sollen neben vormodernen Praktiken des Computing schwerpunktmäßig die Entstehung aktueller Kommunikations- und Informationstechnologien im Horizont ökonomischer und staatlicher Verwaltungsorganisation im 19. Jahrhundert, das Aufkommen neuer Managementtechniken nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg (scientific engineering), das Problem relationaler Datenbanken ab den 1970er Jahren, aber auch Fragen von Big Data zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. |

History of Computing
The course focuses on the cultural techniques of information processing. Instead of a classical media history of 'the computer', the emphasis is on the genealogy of materially and infrastructurally based practices and technologies of calculating and computing. This includes the discussion of the relation between hardware and software, the negotiation of standards, but also the emergence of institutions and scientific disciplines. Besides considering premodern contexts, the focus lies on the development of communication and information technologies within economic and governmental administration in the nineteenth century, on the emergence of new management techniques after the Second World War (scientific management), on the problem of relational databases since the 1970s, but also on questions of Big Data at the beginning of the 21st century. |
