engl. Beschreibung/ Kurzkommentar

In this project we will study smileys!!! :) Well, not just that. Smileys - or more generally, emoticons, that is, typographic representations of facial expressions denoting emotions - are just one way of conveying meaning beyond words via linguistic cues in textual communication channels. Other means include emojis, all caps (FOR SHOUTING, OF COURSE) or multiple punctuations to indicate enthusiasm (as in the leading sentence of this paragraph). We will analyse the use and function of different textual cues in online communication (like Twitter, WhatsApp, you name it ...), develop methods to process them and investigate the impact of these cues on downstream applications such as sentiment analysis, authorship analysis, etc.
