How does the perception of one's own body and the perception of others interact to shape interpersonal behaviour? The project investigates the effects of manipulating avatar body characteristics in immersive virtual reality. Based on theories of embodiment, we will systematically dissociate self-representation from representation by others. This can happen by independently manipulating implicit status cues (for example body size, gender, age) across individual perspectives. For example, a participant may see his avatar as larger than those of other group members, who see it as normal size. The overall aim is to explore whether changes in avatar body characteristics affect an individual's confidence, their perceived social power or a sense of agency during social interactions. We will design and implement the experiment, collect behavioural and questionnaire data, and analyse how virtual embodiment shapes social interaction. |
