"Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles was the very first music video ever broadcasted on MTV on August 1st 1981. When MTV officially shut down its 24-hour music channels in the US in 2025, they ended their final broadcast with "Video Killed the Radio Star" again, quoting the line: "You're the last one." MTV Germany abolished their music program by airing "Musique Non-Stop" by Kraftwerk December 31st 2025. What will be the future of music television after it has shifted away from traditional 24-hour linear broadcasting? And how will it influence the aesthetics of the music video? During this semester we will research the world of of music videos and the art works created within the genre. We will look at the general role of music in the dramatic arts in history and its impact of movie making today. The term "leitmotiv", for example, literally meaning "leading motif" is a musical phrase associated with a person, place, or even an idea. Originally starting with the romantic operas the use of leitmotivs became the norm in Hollywood's film music compositions since the first talkies too. Interestingly enough, we have to take into consideration that music videos are often regarded as not acceptable for applications, e.g. at the University of Music Franz Liszt. We will explore a wide range of styles and contemporary video producing techniques like animation, documentary, and non-narrative approaches such as experimental film.
