This module introduces participants to general biology lab practices with a particular focus on artistic and experimental approaches to working with microorganisms, their environments and digital media production equipment. First, participants will be introduced to the biolab environment, equipment, procedures and safety protocols. Then they'll practice the cultivation and propagation of microorganisms. Examples include Euglena gracilis, and Physarum polycephalum (slime mold). Participants learn to observe and document living cultures, including basic techniques for producing photographic and video documentation through a microscope. The second part focuses on individual project development. Participants brainstorm and develop an own project idea exploring possible technical, artistic, or hybrid approaches to interactions between microorganisms and their environments. The process encourages experimentation and hands-on learning rather than predetermined outcomes. The course is mandatory for participants who wish to work in the biolab. |
