The seminar focuses on the development of audiovisual live performances and the interplay between image, sound, and real-time technologies. TouchDesigner serves as the central technical environment, while at the same time being understood as part of a broader audiovisual setup that may incorporate instruments, electronic sound generation, controllers, and other hardware and software. Alongside the technical implementation, the seminar centres on the development of individual audiovisual works. This also involves questions of performance, timing, and dramaturgy: How can audiovisual systems be played and controlled live? How can transitions and arcs of tension be created? And how can image, sound, and space be brought together within a shared performance situation? Starting from both fundamental and advanced techniques in TouchDesigner, we will explore real-time image processing, generative visuals, audio analysis, envelopes, parameter mapping, as well as communication via MIDI and OSC. We will investigate different relationships between image and sound, ranging from audio-reactive visuals and direct synchronisation to more independent visual and sonic structures. The seminar is explicitly open to students working in the fields of sound, electronic music, and sound design. Previous experience with TouchDesigner is helpful but not required. The course aims to deliberately bring together students with different technical and creative backgrounds. The goal of the semester is to collaboratively develop and stage an audiovisual concert in which the resulting works will be presented as live performances. |
