While representation forms the very basis of architecture, and serves as a perennial site for its discursive reinvention, its formats and techniques are not exclusive to it. Representation is how architecture demonstrates itself to be not only present within, but critically relevant to contemporary debate, concern, and struggle at large. Axel, Nick, Hugo Corbett, Salomon Frausto,Nikolaus Hirsch, Marina Otero Verzier, Tamar Shafrir, and Anton Vidokle. “Architecture and Representation—Editorial.” e-flux Architecture, 2017. The seminar examines the relationship between architecture and representation using specific case studies. In the first part of the seminar, formats and techniques for representing architecture are identified, discussed, and further developed on the basis of current or previous project work by the students. In the second part of the seminar, a joint project is created against the backdrop of a current political dilemma. The Elizabeth Street Garden in the NoLIta district of Manhattan, New York, serves as a case study. The community garden is owned by the city administration and managed by a non-profit organization. The fight to save Elizabeth Street Garden reflects a citywide dichotomy between development and affordability on the one hand, and residents’ need for community, culture, and nature on the other. This dichotomy must be reflected upon and represented in order to resolve it. |
