Urban sociology takes on the challenge of researching cities as complex social formations, addressing pressing questions. What’s special about life in cities? How to make sense of myriad of social dynamics occurring in urban centers, such as gentrification? How to make sense of the growing urban inequalities expressed as segregation and discrimination? How to deal with exploding tourism and precarization of urban life? Where does the city start and where does it end? This seminar addresses these questions and many more. It aims at providing a general overview of academic discourses and debates in urban sociology. As a reading seminar, we will discuss peer-reviewed papers and similar academic literature on a weekly basis. - Zielgruppe: M.sc. European Urban Studies - max.
