Die Übersetzung von Texten in Bilder (und umgekehrt) gehört zu den grundlegenden Operationen der gestalterischen Praxis. Ein Sonderfall dieses Transfers ist die Buchillustration, deren Geschichte von den illuminierten Handschriften der Spätantike bis zu den multimedialen Inszenierungen der Gegenwart reicht.
Neben der Bibel sind es besonders die Hauptwerke der Weltliteratur, zu denen im Lauf der Jahrhunderte immer neue Bilderzyklen entstehen. Mit Blick auf den Bezugsrahmen des Kosmos Weimar und das Dante-Jahr 2015 behandelt das Modul ausgewählte Illustrationen zu Vergils Aeneis, Dantes Divina Commedia und Goethes Faust. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Reflexion über die künstlerischen Mittel und den Beitrag der Kunst für das Verständnis der Texte.
Das Modul umfaßt ein (Theorie-)Seminar und eine Übung vor Originalen. Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die zugrundeliegenden Texte und deren Illustrationsgeschichte, ergänzt durch weiterführende Fragen zur medienübergreifenden Übersetzung und Text-Bild-Differenz. Die Übung bietet Gelegenheit zum Besuch der Museen der Klassik Stiftung Weimar: Viele der im Seminar diskutierten Originale können vor Ort eingesehen und auf diejenigen Aspekte hin untersucht werden, die sich der digitalen Reproduktion entziehen.
Das Seminar eignet sich als Einführung in die Bildwelten der Weltliteratur, gibt aber auch Anregungen für die theoretische Reflexion der eigenen Gestaltungspraxis. Nicht zuletzt steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Wechselverhältnis von Text und Bild auch im Zusammenhang mit der Idee einer Visualisierung der gesamten Commedia, die im Dante-Jahr 2015 als Masterprojekt an der Fakultät Medien angeboten werden soll.
Vorausgesetzt wird die Bereitschaft zur aktiven Mitarbeit sowohl bei der Erschließung der Inhalte als auch mit eigenen Interventionen und Stellungnahmen. Passive Sprachkenntnisse des Deutschen und Englischen sind notwendig.

Images of World Literature: Illustrations of Virgil, Dante and Goethe
The translation of texts into images (and vice versa) is a fundamental operation in creative practice. Book illustration is a special case of such transfer and its history reaches from the illuminated manuscripts of Late Antiquity to the multi-media presentations of our own day.
Aside from the Bible, it is the canonical works of world literature that have received ever new picture cycles across the centuries. Within the framework of Kosmos Weimar and with a view to the Dante anniversary in 2015 this module will examine select illustrations of Virgil's Aeneid, Dante's Divina Commedia, and Goethe's Faust. The main objective is to reflect on the functions of artistic media and the way art contributes to the understanding of texts.
The module consists of a seminar focused on theoretical concerns, together with practical sessions in front of the original works of art. The seminar offers a survey of the texts and the histories of their illustrations, supplemented with methodological questions about the translation across media and the distinction between image and text. The practical sessions give the opportunity to view many of the originals that are discussed in class and to examine at first hand those aspects and contexts that digital reproduction cannot fully convey.
The seminar is a good introduction to the image worlds of world literature, while also stimulating theoretical reflection about one's own creative work. Finally, the relationship between text and image is a topic that connects to the idea of a visualization of the entire Commedia, a masters project that is previewed for the Dante year 2015 at the Fakultät Medien.
Active in-class participation, both with regard to the materials covered and in terms of contributions, presentations, and interventions are expected. At least passive knowledge of German and English is a prerequisite.
