Language requirements for studying in Weimar

When you apply for an international, english-language study program German language skills are not required, but you should have a basic knowledge of the German language to help you in everyday life in Weimar. As an exchange student (i.e. Erasmus) level A1/A2 German language skills are expected, Free-movers should at least have level B2 language skills. Depending on the course and faculty, lectures and seminars may be held mainly in German, so we generally recommend all students have German language skills at a B1/B2 level.

If you decide to pursue a German-language degree programme, you have to be quite proficient in German. Before you apply for admission to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, find out what the language prerequisites are for the degree programme you have in mind.

The university requires that all foreign applicants to German-language degree programmes pass the DSH 2 examination. You can take the DSH examination at the Language Centre. The testing dates are scheduled each year in February, July and September. Contact the Language Centre to learn when the next testing dates are and to sign up.

You can test your German language skills or take a DSH practice test to find out how well you would do on a real test.

If you already passed an equivalent German language examination (such as the TestDaF). in your home country, you can have the Language Centre issue you a certificate confirming your language proficiency. To obtain this certificate, you will have to provide the Language Centre with legalized copies of your examination certificate in either English or German translation.

If you have any questions concerning the DSH examination, please contact Dr. Susanne Kirchmeyer.

German language courses offered by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

The Language Centre at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers students many opportunities to learn German.

If you are an absolute beginner, you can sign up for a 3 weeks intensive language course in March or September. On the first day of classes, you will be given a test to assess your German language level.

If you have basic knowledge of German, but not enough to pursue a German-language degree programme, you have the chance to attend intensive language courses in Weimar. The objective of these courses is to prepare you for the DSH examination. International students with basic knowledge of German usually have to participate in these courses for one year before they can pass the DSH and apply for university admission.

If you have very good knowledge of German, you may choose to participate in a three-week intensive DSH preparatory course (every September) to get ready for the DSH examination. After you’ve passed the test, you may immediately commence your studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

If you have already begun studying at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and want to improve your German language skills during the semester, register for a once-a-week German course. Keep in mind, however, that you must already know German to participate in these courses and that you are obliged to complete a language assessment test in advance.

You can also practice German at the Bauhaus Summer School, or together with a fellow German student, at the German Stammtisch or even online.
