Goethe-Institut and the Experimental Radio Chair of Bauhaus-Universit\u00e4t Weimar would like to announce the beginning of the Radio Art Residency in Weimar with its first artist-in-residence Masimba Hwati for the period April-June 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Radio Art Residency Weimar is as a joint project between Goethe-Institut and the Bauhaus-Universit\u00e4t Weimar in cooperation with the University of Music Franz Liszt, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Thuringia\u2019s Landesmedienanstalt, EIGENHEIM Weimar\/Berlin, ACC Galerie Weimar and Radio Lotte; the Radio Art Residency aims to promote independent artistic work and to support the realization of new artworks. From the use of the radio as an exhibition space for artworks to real-time medium, the residency offers a wide range of creative options for artistic practice.<\/p>\n

The Radio Art Residency started in 2018 as a cooperation between Goethe-Institut and Radio Corax (Halle\/Saale) with the support of the Kunststiftung Sachsen-Anhalt After three successful years and 6 artists-in-residence, the Radio Art Residency moves now from Halle to Weimar in a slightly changed format.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over 450\u00a0 <\/span>applications from more than 60 countries all over the globe answered the first open call in January 2021. The proposed projects ranged from podcasts to radio compositions\/plays, from sound installations to live performances using archival or newly created material and show the worldwide growing interest in Radio Art .<\/p>\n

The jury – consisting of representatives from Goethe Institut, Bauhaus University Weimar, Deutschlandfunk Kultur and Galerie Eigenheim Weimar\/Berlin\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 finally chose to invite\u00a0 <\/span>the Zimbabwean artist Masimba Hwati with his project: Wairesi, Wartime radio meets Harare Black Market.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Masimba Hwati works across sculpture, video, performance and sound. He holds an MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and is a PhD in Art practice, candidate at the Academy of Fine Art Vienna. He is a Skowhegan School of painting and Sculpture alumni class of 2019. He studied and taught sculpture at Harare Polytechnic Art school. Collections Include University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), Iziko, South African National Gallery. Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Scott White Contemporary, San Diego, George R. Nnamdi Collection, Detroit Michigan. National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Gervanne & Matthias Leridon Collection. In 2015 he showed at the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 56th edition. He is an honorary research fellow\u00a0 <\/span>at Rhodes University\u00a0 <\/span>Fine Arts Department in Grahamstown, SA. Solo and group shows include Belgium. Zimbabwe, South Africa, Germany, United States, France, and Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He will start his residency in Weimar as from April 1st 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
