We are pleased to announce our next and fourth artist of the Radio Art Residency Weimar: Mr. Warrick Swinney with his project \u201cThe ghostly disappearance of my country\u2019s future: a sonic hauntology\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his project the artist focuses on reapproaching his existence as a recorded being though personal archives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a deep-seated interest in sound, music and politics, Swinney\u2019s approach to the sonic arts is rooted in a DIY-aesthetic. This comes out of his involvement with the post-punk ethics
at Shifty Studios in the 1980s during the turbulent years straddling the collapse of apartheid and South Africa\u2019s transition to democracy. He worked in sound design and music production as well as performance and sound based art at Milestone Studios (2000-2018) in Cape Town before moving into academia, fine-art sound studies and teaching. He exhibited two video works at the 56th Venice Biennale (\u201eAll the world\u2019s Futures\u201c) in 2015. Hedeveloped his artistic writing around ideas dealing with political and social similarities between the transitions inpost-soviet countries and post-apartheid South Africa. His sonic explorations dive into silencing, self-censorship, and the tensions between politics and art in totalitarian states. Swinney\u2019s academic explorations culminated in his graduating in 2018 with an MFA (with distinction) from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and runs courses at Michaelis School of Fine Art. These centre around practical and theoretical sound-studies dealing with current ethical and political issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Warrick Swinney will be artist in resident from the 15th<\/sup> of September 2022 until the 15th<\/sup> of December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stay tuned for more information!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Radio Art Residency Weimar is a joint project of the Goethe-Institut and the Bauhaus-Universit\u00e4t Weimar in cooperation with the Hochschule f\u00fcr Musik Franz Liszt, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, EIGENHEIM Weimar\/Berlin, ACC Galerie Weimar and Radio Lotte. The aim of the project is to promote independent artistic work and to support the realisation of new works of art. From using radio as an exhibition space for artworks to coping with radio as a real-time medium, the residency offers a wide range of creative possibilities for artistic practice.
