Comic ware Introduction

Title: Comicware: Rethinking diverse positioning in Self and Otherness

Target groups: The project specifically targets students who face uncertainty about their identity, their perceived social value and even their hobby.

Problem: Some individuals tend to judge others from a detached, omniscient perspective for their hobby and appearance, failing to acknowledge the complexity behind discriminatory behaviors. Discriminators often lack awareness of their actions, while those subjected to discrimination may endure it due to personal or systemic factors. Additionally, some individuals adopt a persistent victim mentality, positioning themselves as victims, which leads them to project blame onto society and seek sympathy rather than empowerment. A lack of diverse perspectives on individual experiences allows these intertwined mindsets to perpetuate discrimination, inhibit resistance, and accumulate negative emotions, resulting in a harmful cycle.

Description of project: Participants will engage in comic creation workshops that incorporate exchanges, interviews, and observational activities. Through the medium of comics, they will explore and reignite passion for life and interpersonal relationships. by crafting exaggerated diverse character designs, fictional scenes, narrative perspective, symbolism, composition and expressive internal monologues and dialogues. These tools allow participants to externalize emotions in a fantastical yet structured format. The immersive qualities of comic storytelling demand us confront issues directly, offering no escape from introspection and prompting thoughtful evaluation of one’s behaviors and values. By examining the roles individuals play within small groups, organizations, and the broader community, they will not only develop a deeper understanding of the influence of both positive and negative energies, but also explore idealized diverse identities and social interactions. The ultimate goal is to enhance self-awareness, foster empathy for interacting with others, and promote internal empowerment.

Follow up: Looking ahead, the project’s structure and methodology could be further developed or scaled into a broader educational model that uses comics as a pedagogical tool. The framework may also be adapted to explore the experiences of intersectional student populations.

Vision: Additionally, the insights and results generated from the project’s use of comics to address themes of equality and empowerment may contribute to academic discourse and be presented at relevant academic conferences.

Timetable for the realisation of the project:

Oct-Dec 2025: The project will include 3 to 4 workshops and a guest seminar. Jan- Mar 2026: After the workshops, participants will have the option to submit their works and take part in a small-scale exhibition to engage and exchange with others. The finding of the project may also be presented at academic conferences related to the theme.
