Description

In the early seventies, Steve Mann „approached the computer as a mediating element, as a form of visual art”, since he started connecting things to his body during his childhood. In this course we will follow his methodology while exposing the logical and (un)natural structure of an embedded or attached object.
As part of computer science, wearable computing and wearable interfaces play a significant role in human computer interaction discourses. Is this regard and within experimental setups, determined by prototypes which we will have to develop in class, we would like to discover and contribute various synergic effects in between human and computer.

Technical approach

The following technologies and languages will be encountered in this course:

  • Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Near Field Communication
  • Preferably Arduino microcontrollers. Furthermore, Raspberry Pi’s and Beagle Bone Boards are more then welcome.
  • Various sensors and actors
  • Mobile app development in Swift or C++ (openFrameworks)

Admission requirements

This course will be held in english and is dedicated for master students enrolled in another IFD course offering, or with instructor permission. Basic knowledge of electronics, microcontrollers and software development is required. Furthermore, it is assumed to purchase electronic components, like sensors, BLE or NFC modules, wires, batteries and so forth (depending on your project).

Registration procedure

Please send your application by email with the Subject ResearchingAndDesigning to: johannes.deich (äht) uni-weimar [d0t] de

  • Name, Surname
  • program and semester (Studienprogramm und Fachsemester)
  • matriculation number (Matrikelnummer)
  • Valid email address @uni-weimar.de (no other mailing addresses will be accepted) Why?
  • Short sentence on why you want to participate in this course.

Evaluation

Successful completion of the course is dependent on regular attendance, active participation, completion of weekly assignments and delivery of a relevant semester project.

Eligible participants

MFA Medienkunst/-gestaltung, MFA Media Art and Design, MSc MediaArchitecture. Students from other departments will have to ask faculty staff wether credit points can be taken into account or not.
