Alena Kroker: Voladores, 2017

alt text alt text

Concept (English):

The project "Voladores" is a visual and acoustic experience of space. It was realized in Unity 3D and offers the possibility to take the view of the fifth Volador, who stays on top of the Palo Volador. You are standing on the pole in dizzy heights and are exposed to the extreme altitude. Flying by flock of birds, a church, woodland and mountain chains intensify the feeling of height. From below you can hear the church bells ringing and villagers. On the top of the pole the wind whistles and one or two birds might come closer than you would have wished. In order to get an understanding of what the other four Voladores are experiencing, the ritual is shown on a video wall and explained by a narrator.

"La Danza de los Voladores" is an ancient Mesoamerican ceremony. It is still performed in isolated pockets of Mexico and Guatemala. According to a myth it was first practiced during a severe drought in order to ask the gods to send down rain. During this ritual five men climb a pole of 30 meters – el "Palo Volador". When they reach the top four men attach themselves to ropes, they represent the four elemtes. Like birds they stretch their arms. From now on the flight begins, headfirst. Before they touch the ground again they will spin around the Palo Volador thirteen times. The fifth man remains on the top of the pole, dancing and playing the flute and the drum. He represents the sun, who asks for protection for the four Voladores. In order to help the ritual survive and thrive in the modern world the ceremony was named an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO."

Konzept (Deutsch):
