===DREAMS IN SPACE and related happenings - A workshop by: Hamish John Appleby===
===DREAMS IN SPACE - A workshop by: Hamish John Appleby===
Location: International School Weimar.
Location: Waldorf Schüle Weimar

Workshop duration: x4 - two to three hour - weekly meetings during the month of Feburary - in participation with the resident art teacher during class time, or run as an after school activity program, depending on what suits the School Director (Russel Marino) as well as the other teacher's schedules.
“I shut my eyes in order to see”.
--Paul Gauguin

The general outline/synopsis of the workshops will be involve:
…and so finally, after much delay and organisation, I was finally given permission to begin the 'space' workshops, but not at the International School as was planned, but instead the Waldorf Schüle also here in Weimar.

Workshop one: Introduction of myself and the theme and what ideas will explored during the four workshops, (listed below) as well as get to know the class a bit as well, with a couple of warm up games.
A couple of compromises had to be made, one of them being that I was only given permission to work with older students, however the experience has been so far really good and the impressions and comments I have been given are that the workshops have been really inspirational and 'eye opening'

Talking to the children about dreams in general - showing some basic background information with visual aids on dreams.
The structure of the workshops have also had to have been condensed as class time is both precious and it has been quite a challenge to even organise the time that I have been given due to the all the other time constrains of both overseeing teachers, class times and students etc... Therefore, I will continue to update the progress as it happens...

Getting them to think about an interesting recent dream that they have had and share their experiences.
The first assignment we have worked on in this series of workshops is exploring the idea of inner space and more succinctly the idea of boundlessness. Through meditation and then silent drawing with blindfolds, the participants have been able to explore a new type of space and one that has previously been undiscovered. The results of the drawing thus far have been both remarkable and even outstanding - as the participants spend 28 minutes of their life in this brave new world of inner space…

Showing a power point presentation of different images connected to the theme 'dreams in space' (similar to what I showed in Max's thursday class for my presentation - but a bit more  "child friendly" in terms of comprehension)
The follow-up group discussions have also been interesting, with students talking about how they felt and how their approach to this type of visual communication was altered. We have also looked at the artist -  Yves Klein's idea of the void and how that relates to this process on the idea of infinite space…

Asking the children what the idea of 'space' means to them: Identifying the different spaces: i.e: the space between objects and ourselves, the space that lies beyond our earth 'out there' and the space we see when we close our eyes.
Workshop classes will continue over the next couple of weeks with more ideas - one of which will be the execution of a communal blindfold Action Painting/Drawing…

A series of questions will be asked and explored about space and distance and then this will be further communicated by drawing or painting.
For reasons of privacy, I have only been able to upload images that focus on the work, avoiding showing people's faces, but I am hoping to get permission to include more images soon…

(This will then, hopefully lead to a series of painting and drawing explorations.)
Workshop two: Students will be asked to imagine what an astronaut might dream about when they are in space. This will be followed up afterwards by the the Greg Chamitoff Astronaut You-Tube video where he talks about how ordinary dreams are when he is in space.
A follow up discussion will then follow and then students will talk about the idea of going to space and who dreams about going into space - and identifying the differences of dreaming about literally going to space - and dreaming that you are in space and dreaming that takes place while in space!
Another part of all the workshops set out from day one, will be to ask the students to keep a visual or written or both  - type of diary of what they dream about every night - and encourage a friendly competition to see who can have a  dream about being 'up there' in space or flying or about space related situations. This possibility will hopefully be enhanced by the participation and engagement of drawing and discussions during the workshops.
Parents will also be give a short letter explaining what the workshop is and to perhaps help with the recording of nightly dreams - should there be any.
Workshop three: Another part of the workshop will be to explore the inner mind of space - and get students to draw what they see when they close their eyes. This will be done under supervision in groups and the students will be blindfolded and given materials to draw freely what shapes colours and objects they see when their eyes are closed, hopeful producing some interesting images. A homework assignment will be given out on this day, where the children have to make a mask out of found/household objects like egg containers - and build a mask that represents their idea of what alien/animals would look like in deep space.
Workshop four: Presentation of masks, with a photo-shooting (by me) and a coming together and finalising of all idea and images - writings etc -
The  workshop goals: for the students/children will be: to participate in a workshop designed to expand the concept of 'space', encourage creativity, build trust in a group situation, excite and stimulate their imagination, be exploratory with open ended possibilities, introduce new and interesting ways of seeing, finding connections between how images and discussions can carry on into the subconscious - and therefore enabling a logical line of after events to happen i.e: dreaming about being in space. Added to this, to work with a person from Australia and get to know a little bit about someone form another land or 'space'
Final outcome:
* to produce a series of drawing and possible writings that will then be exhibited at the International school or possibly somewhere in the Bauhaus if it can be organised - to be further discussed with Max.
* In addition to this, a booklet could be produced with a selection of drawings writing and ideas from the children - (perhaps made possible by a small financial donation from the International School - in exchange for the teaching of the workshops on my time - without pay… something to be further discussed with Russell Marino)
* and or: a PPP of students images with their own narration overlaid of what the images are about
* Another idea is to overlay the children's images on a PPP with the voices of adults - thus combining the idea of crossing generation perspective and this could also be an interesting way to present the works for the work as well as to the children - to give their work a 'big person' voice.

Student projects of the class Space is the Place:

'“The visions we offer our children shape the future. It matters what those visions are. Often they become self-fulfilling prophecies. Dreams are maps” Carl Sagan, 1994.'

I am interested in the idea of running a creative workshop with the children from the International school in Weimar – where by, I give them a task to draw how they imagine space to be. This could be a fantastic opportunity for both myself and the children to engage in a workshop or kind of ‘mini project’ that they have probably never encountered before, with the outcome being a possible mini exhibition of drawings – or other creations.

I will be speaking with the director of the school(Russell Marino) about my plans. I also like the idea of continuing this field of enquiry, because it allows more of a free way of working that would be interesting to me.

What effects do dreams have on children when they sleep at night? How might this shape their future? What if a child is inspired by my workshop and dreams about flying in space that night? This could also be integrated into the project as well. – and What an interesting way to record the dreams of children by influencing them in a positive way to maybe dream about being in space! There is the literal dream of wishing to be in space as well as the dreamt dream – it could be interesting to find out how the children deal with the information presented and to see what inspiration presents itself. I imagine that the final outcome will take the form of a documented book. I would like to bring into this exploration my own photographic images. I would also like to continue working with still images, collecting and collating information, personal accounts, visceral metaphors and other materials too, for cohesion of this narrative. The continuation of finding stories, overlaid onto people’s personal accounts of dreams in space or dreams connected with space could be an idea that would allow for crossing both the innocence of youth and fantasy together with narration from differing age groups. Andreas Beyer: The Radiostar

Since more than 100 years humankind uses technology for broardcasting content and for some physics reasons nearly 80% of that signals are just "lost" in space. That means the nearby outer space ( 100 ly orbit) is in a way a kind of radioarchive or a cultural documentation of hunmankinds ability to send signals with several technologies. I'm focused on the frequency band of ultra short wave radio signals. To explain this cosmic-international radioarchive, I want to create a navigationplan to "travel" through that archive. the installation will be a (selfmade) telescopebody (no tech inside) that can be moved in different directions to zoom into a model of that "radiohalo". The room, where the telescope will be placed, is prepaired with some small radiotransmitters (selfmade) to symbolize where some particularly broadcasts are “waving” in outer space. Inside that telescopebody will be some, i think maybe three, radioreceivers to get in contact with the transmitters and by moving that telescopebody the recipient can adjust the programm that sounds in the body of the telescope. Moving forwards towards towards a frontier.

I will produce a machine for self video recording and then film a short video metaphor.

The image will include a horse walking alone into the distance. In the image, a large rope, visibly attached to the camera point will lead towards the horse, as he is pulling the camera, filming himself.

I will construct a specialized cart for holding and stabilising the camera and a harness for attaching this cart to a horse. The horse will be instructed to walk in a straight line along a road in the countryside. The cart will be made of wood, well oiled.

The music for the video will be an adaptation of Grace Slick's 1980 solo song Dreams. The voice part of the original song will be written into a score for cello and recorded especially for this video.‎

STAGES

  1. Stage
    • designing the camera cart
    • training the horse
    • testing video equipment and lighting(outdoor conditions)
    • looking for a shooting location (stright country road)
  2. Stage

Idea: Zeittunnel - “Space is The Place”

The Idea

VOYAGEO consists of projections of satellite pictures onto the human body. These pictures are not about act photography, but about the recognition of earth and the human body. Mankind has a high selfconfidence about itself and its reign on earth but still is not really selfaware. We are trying to produce thus selfconsciousness by showing not the beauty showed in today's media. We want to have a look on the everyday reality of body and earth.

Some Background Information

Our idea bases upon two topics: The Innovation of Satellite Images & the Construction of the Human Body in the Media.

Our main focus is on the fascination of satellite images. Here you can find an introduction to remote sensing: [1]

And here are some interesting links to develop:

In sum, the satellite pictures offer a special perspective on the earth: <videoflash type="youtube">hH8UMbzgIAE|340|300</videoflash>

In concern to the photography of Human Bodies we especially dicussed the Individuality of everybody's external appearance. This is related to the individual appearance of the earth on satellite images.

People seem to be physically perfect in the modern media. But we know that is mostly manipulated:

<videoflash type="youtube">MFPGa0pKyTg|340|232</videoflash> So the question was & still is: What is physical individuality?
Wikipedia: english, deutsch

The Concept in the Process

We created the Website voyageo.de that acts as “Advent Calendar”, so that every day from the 1st of December until the 24th of December visitors could discover one picture there.

We made two photo-sessions with the projection of satellite images on human bodies & shot a lot of beautiful photos. After having selected 24 different themes, we completed the photos with written texts about geographical, historical, political or even individual information & published one a day. It was our aim to take the visitors on a 24-day-long journey.

The marketing for our website went into different directions:

  1. We included Google-Analytics. So we had a detailled overview over the daily reception of voyageo.de.
  2. We used our private (Email-) Network in order to spread the information about the online "Advent Calendar".
  3. We posted voyageo.de in different topic-related forums of photography or geographics.
  4. The “Advent Calendar” itself is a publishing format used to catch for recurrent attention. We thought the interest in our topic will be higher if people are curious to discover something everyday.

The Results

the visits on world map
most of the visitors came from Germany
35% of the visits came from referring sites

Our project was successfully running in December 2009 on www.voyageo.de!

According to Google-Analytics nearly 1.300 different people (absolute IP-adresses are meant, repeated visits are not counted) visited our website during the 1st to 24th of December 2009. We had in this time 8.802 pageviwes at all. The average of site-viewing laid at over 7 minutes. That's really long for the typically fast consumer behavior in the Internet. Most of the reactions we personal received from the recipients were truely positive. We had visits from Austria, Switzelrand, the Netherlands, the USA, the UK, France, Sweden, Argentina, Russia & from other countries. Inferential, our posting actions seemed to be successfull. Most of the visits were directly. So the use of our private networks & the direct marketing strategies had most influence on visiting this website.

Afterwards

The VOYAGEO project in its original sense is already finished.

Now we “cleaned up” the site. Descriptions associated to “Advent Calendar” are no more visble. The website functionings as a gallery since January 2010. All photo-text-combinations are still available for direct visitors, search engines & referring sites. Furthermore, people who visit the site still have the chance to contact us for feedback or further information.

The plan is to produce artificial space pictures, photographs and an animated space to explore by using different materials and methods. 360°, telescope and long exposure time photos could melt with photos of surfaces, mist (artificial nebula) a.s.o

The best way to present our work is probably an exhibition. A series of 9 photo prints (ca.30x45), a screen to show the flash animation and documentation and also a table or box to show the photographed objects.

Bianka Langnickel: Bookproject: “space is my place” – aren‘t we all aliens?

for me space is in general is a very undefined place. as i think it encourage everybody to use their whole imagination and creativity i will use this unknown area to create my own place, figures and spacy environments. i am going to make an illustrated book for children which consists of these imaginary protagonists and will lead them to an abstract way of creating their own playground. the book will give them the opportunity to reconstruct the creatures by themselfs and learn how to create their own „aliens“. when the child is interacting with the object playing a part in the story its more easy for them to get a connection between the actual sense of making up something in addition to the creative process. they can use the „aliens“ they build before to make up further stories and play them within their family. so in the end their will be a book which provides a inter-social way of reading, listening, building and a wide range of playing effects on little children as much as on adults. it is „talking“ to different senses and invites everybody to join who loves to see the world and especially the space more open minded and in a creatively way of thinking about „outhere“.

  1. Stage
    • making experiments with the materials related to space and the figures to construct out of this material
    • finding an ideal story
  2. Stage
    • creating all of the figures
    • build sets where the figures act in
  3. Stage
    • testing photographie equipment and lighting, composition etc.
    • final photographie work - taking pictures of the actual sets
  4. Stage
    • postproduction _ retusche - like making the pictures more detailed, contrasted and fix some shadow areas etc.
  5. Stage
    • illustrate the be-creative part
  6. Stage
    • search for a publisher

The Idea.

File:Seite1.jpg
The Spaceship

Imagine the universe's infinite emptiness, a place where absolute silence rules. We want to fill this space symbolical and to give the innumerably stars a special sound. In interaction between the user with the stars and the stars among themselves, there will be different sounds create. They will picture a musically portrait of the universe.

The Concept.

File:Seite2.jpg
Shockwaves

The user flies with a starship through the space. He is able to interact with the Star by activate them via shooting. An activated star makes noise and a shockwave arises. It evolves through the space and activates other stars and items on its way which also make sounds and send new shockwaves. An chain reaction starts and an uniquely world of noises is created. If a zodiac sign gets activated all linked stars will start making tones at the same time.

Constellations and Orbs.

File:Seite3.jpg
Signs (Ursa Major)

Some stars are interlinked to signs. From time to time new signs will uprise and old ones will disappear. If one star in a sign is activated by a shockwave, the other stars in the sign will also activate. Now and again different orbs like comets or planets will appear. If a shockwave hits such an orb, a new sound, which is very different, will be created.

The editorially Arrangement.

The tone color and the volume of the created sound are swayed by the size of stars. A large start creates a deeply and loudly tone. Which sound you will hear is random.

Life and Death.

File:Seite5.jpg
Planets, Black Holes,…

The shockwave which is send out by a star has a finitely lifetime. With growing size it becomes weaker. How large an shockwave can be is addicted to the size of a star.

The realization.

The interface for our project is build with Flash. All sounds will be integrated into the Flash-file, so the "instrument" is very portable and easy to handle. The application could be distributed via web because no special hard- or software is needed.

Installation and Performance

Please come this Thursday at 8 p.m. to the Basement of M5 to check out our performance as well as a chance to see the space!

<videoflash type="youtube">nh5B8pQKP0o|340|275</videoflash> The Setup Process

Concept

The moon has come into focus again in the great Space race. It has been forty years since Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, now after the recent discovery of water on the moon a new interest has been sparked about finally heading back. In this new moon race has new contenders, the US and Russia are no longer in the lead. By 2015 it might be a Chinese man to be the next to step foot on the moon.

We conceptualize our project around dissolving the western ideals and myths about the moon and working with Chinese mythology and symbolism as our focus. Our concept of the moon stems from the three Chinese moon myths the story of Chang'e 嫦娥, Wu Gang吴刚 , and the Jade Rabbit 玉兔. These three myths revolve around a mystical laurel tree that grows on the moon.

Our project is not just an installation, but also involves a performance piece. The installation itself takes place in the Basement room of Marien Strasse 5, where its floors will be covered with fine ash sculpted to look like the lunar surface. The archway in the room is covered and shaped into a crescent where luminescent blue light, represents a lunar earth-rise.

Performance

Our concept behind the performance stems from the three Chinese moon myths Chang’e, Wu Gang, and the Jade rabbit. These roles shall be played out in our rendition, influenced not only by the space but also from our perception of these characters in contrast to modern moon missions.

The performance features the three Chinese mythological characters representing the Chinese moon mythology. The costumes and actions are stylized and simplified through our artistic rendition of their stories influenced by current events, mainly the discovery of water on the moon.

Their actions are slow and elegant as if they move at half speed. Their movements are defined by their characters, such as the chopping of the uncuttable tree, the mulling of the mortar, and the morning of Chang’e. The actors pantomime the gestures, and the sound is then played into the space.

The performance will last around an hour, with the chance for people to come and view the performance on the opening day of our installation. These roles will be played by Chinese students here in Weimar.

Installation

The room where we plan on creating our installation and making the performance in, is located under Merienstraße 5, at the end of a long corridor. One enters the room after making a turn down a corridor, and has to step into the space. The room features high ceilings with pipes, cement floors, and an archway to a small alcove.

We plan on working with the rooms unique architectural elements, such as the archway. We plan on blocking off the alcove and turning the bottom part of the archway into a horizontal crescent light. We plan on covering up a few of the rooms features, such as the piping and the circuit box with dark fabric so that these unnecessary elements do not interfere with the experience.

Upcoming Steps
    • Editing the sounds to the desired effect
  1. Installing
    • Setting up the space the week before the opening with the Ash
  2. Rehearsing
    • Running over the staging for the installation with the actors
  3. Opening of the Show with the performance
  4. Documentation
    • Creating a finished documentation of the process for web
    • Creating a video of the performance

Examples of our stars
Sketch of the exhibition

Idea

We took the stars from the sky . They are used by us. You can find them in logos, distinctions, decorations, jewellery, names, pictures and many other uses. I want to collect and exhibit them.

Exhibition

After a lot of thinking and talking to Max Neupert, Christine Hill and other people I finally came to this exhibition-idea.

The stars are hanging from the ceiling at the end of a very long corridor. So it is impossible to identify them with the naked eye. The visitors have to look through a telescope to explore my collection of stars.

Needs

  • telescope
  • collection of stars
  • black molton
  • long corridor about 20 m
  • spotlight
  • barrier tape
  • invisible strings

Shenzhou Raumschiff

Gedanken meiner Idee

<flash>file=Find_diffrent.swf‎|attribute=value|...</flash>‎

I will design a virtual space with the solar system's nine planets, nebulae and all kinds of meteorites analog out. The Visitors can make use of the mouse and keyboard keys such as "up", "down", "left" and "right" in the whole space random wandering. To make the simulation more realistic, I will collect the texture first. Of course I can design a variety of sound effects too, for example: when I click a planet, it will send an interesting sound. Although that is a simulation of the solar system, but I will give this space a particular style, and the website will receive a seemly interfaces-design.
