What does it mean when the first Google hit for the sociological term "counter culture" is a shop site for coffee enthusiasts? Perhaps the selling of the term is complete: nothing counts without having a marketable aspect to it. An over-the-counter transaction is the most common of contemporary exchanges: the apothecary, the bank, the grocery, the department store. We meet total strangers in this manner every day, many times. What is the nature of this exchange, how is it best conducted and what are the artistic elements involved in it? How can we design our ideal transactional enterprise as a part of our daily life activity?

One of the most common tableau(x) vivant(s) (?) we encounter is that of the counter space in functional use: a shop counter (tresen), a work bench, a kitchen counter (Arbeitsfläche). These are ready-made real life installations that are constantly in flux from use and re-arrangement. Tools, objects, residue and sales implements make up a working arsenal of materials that we will examine, accrue and employ to meet our needs.

As a result of Moden projects from 2009/2010, there is a fully functioning small shop framework installed in our project space. This basic shop environment is the foundation for our class experiments. We will design theme transactions, outfit them with the proper ephemera and working elements, determine a proper persona and demeanor for the exchange, and do numerous test runs of such transactions.

We will investigate a number of artistic practitioners who focus their work on the ethics and issues of exchange and the small business. We will focus on the notion of "hooshing" — the term in the stylist community for exacting aesthetic attention paid to daily life, and its functional elements.

The term "counter" in Counter-Culture alludes to the movement being "against" the establishment or hoping to supply an alternative. Our question might be: What are we for?

Was bedeutet es, wenn das erste Google-Suchergebnis für den soziologischen Begriff „Counter Culture“ (Gegenkultur) ein Online-Shop für Kaffee-Enthusiasten ist? Vielleicht ist der Ausverkauf des Begriffs restlos: Etwas zählt nicht, wenn es keinen vermarktbaren Gesichtspunkt gibt. Ein Schaltergeschäft (over-the-counter transaction) ist die gewöhnlichste Form heutigen Austauschs: Apotheke, Bank, Lebensmittelhandlung, Kaufhaus. Auf diese Weise treffen wir täglich mehrmals uns vollkommen Fremde. Was ist das Wesen dieses Austauschs, wie wird er bestmöglich durchgeführt und welche künstlerischen Elemente sind daran beteiligt? Wie können wir unser ideales Geschäftsmodell („transactional enterprise“) als Teil unseres täglichen Lebens gestalten?

Eines der bekanntesten tableaux vivants, die uns begegnen, ist das des Ladentischs im Gebrauch: Tresen, Theke, Ausschank, Werkbank, Küchenarbeitsfläche. Sie sind gebrauchsfertige („ready-made“) Installationen des wirklichen Lebens, die sich in fortwährender Veränderung durch Benutzung und Neu-Anordnung befinden. Dieses aus Werkzeugen, Dingen, Überresten und Verkaufsutensilien bestehende Material-Arsenal werden wir sammeln, untersuchen und für unsere Zwecke verwenden.

In Folge der 2009-2010 durchgeführten „Moden & öffentliche Erscheinungsbilder“-Projekte, gibt es ein voll funktionsfähiges kleines Ladengeschäft in unserem Projektraum. Diese Basisausstattung bietet die Grundlage für die Experimente des Kurses. Wir werden thematische Transaktionen entwerfen, sie mit geeigneten Verbrauchs- und Arbeitsmaterialien ausstatten, dazugehörige Rollen und -verhalten bestimmen und zahlreiche Testläufe solcher Verkaufshandlungen durchführen.

Wir werden uns mit einer Reihe von Künstlern-/innen befassen, die sich schwerpunktmäßig in ihrer Arbeit mit der Ethik und den Belangen des Austauschs und von Kleinunternehmen auseinandersetzen. Wir werden uns auf die Bedeutung des Begriffs „Hooshing“ konzentrieren, der in der Designercommunity dafür steht, sich mit außergewöhnlicher ästhetischer Aufmerksamkeit alltäglichen Lebensumständen und deren funktionalen Elemente zu widmen.
