Lecturer: Jörg Brinkmann
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS
Venue: Digital Bauhaus Lab, Bauhausstraße 9a
First Date: Friday, 06.11.2020, 13:00

Description
Critical VR Lab II – Lab Work will give participants the possibility to work in the Digital Bauhaus Lab, after receiving an introduction to the Corona hygiene regulations.
Groups of maximal two students can choose between three time slots and work individually on two VR systems (HTC Vive + HighSpeed PC). Therefore, it will be possible for six students to work in the Digital Bauhaus Lab every week and with maximal 12 participants each student will be able to work in the Lab every second week. It will also be possible for participants to borrow one of five OculusGO VR glasses as well as one of three Ricoh Theta 360 cameras and use them to work on projects outside of the Digital Bauhaus Lab.
The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality concepts. It’s aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, a challenging medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication, especially at times of the Corona Crisis which creates new challenges to the way we interact with each other. Please watch the video for more information.

Recommended Requirements
Applicants should have a basic knowledge of working with Unity, access to the Internet, a Computer and Headphones. It is preferred but not explicitly required to have accomplished Critical VR Lab I.

Criteria for passing
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki

Smell the Memories in VR

Someday in the future, maybe there is nothing left in the world destroyed. If we miss the previous world, can we go back to the precious memories in some way?
This project unites some of human senses and try to explore the previous memories through the smell. In this project, the odors are visualised in different colours. When the user walks into the areas of odors, they can hear the sound recordings of the previous scene and can actually smell the smell through a physical prototype at the same time.

Video Link: https://vimeo.com/473517171

Concept:
„Virtual reality (VR) experiences are becoming ever more immersive. Smell has a tremendous potential for AR and VR applications, as it addresses our emotions so directly. „ I plan on synthesising smell for VR—- to combine different senses together.
„Thanks to the structure of the human brain, scent is incredibly evocative. Your olfactory cortex–the part of the brain that processes smell–is part of the the same system that stores your emotions and memories. This is why catching a whiff of certain aromas–perfume, for example–can trigger very specific memories.“

Concept development:
this is a smell map from an artist. I’m inspirited from that, I will also use colour to visualise the smell and add the sound to smell in the scene.

Testing:
In the testing phase, I used FPS to perform a simulation test on the computer. Because of the limitation of devices, I used Google's cardboard to do a simple scene test. But it is a pity that people can’t move with Cardboard.

Unfinished part:

There should be an Arduino- controlled smell trigger device, which can set up to VR glasses. When user within the immersive range of coloured smell particle system, it will trigger the physical device to spray the corresponding smell to the user, so as to let user have an immersive feeling.

Unfinished part: There should be an Arduino- controlled smell trigger device, which can set up to VR glasses. When user within the immersive range of coloured smell particle system, it will trigger the physical device to spray the corresponding smell to the user, so as to let user have an immersive feeling.

Concept:
„Virtual reality (VR) experiences are becoming ever more immersive. Smell has a tremendous potential for AR and VR applications, as it addresses our emotions so directly. „ I plan on synthesising smell for VR—- to combine different senses(Sight and smell) together.

Description:

„Thanks to the structure of the human brain, scent is incredibly evocative. Your olfactory cortex–the part of the brain that processes smell–is part of the the same system that stores your emotions and memories. This is why catching a whiff of certain aromas–perfume, for example–can trigger very specific memories.“

I will build a future scene in which everything is gone. (In 2050,Large-scale air domes have been extracted over in many of the world’s most prominent cities, to build some safe havens for some people.) While building the VR environment, I will also create a helmet-shaped prototype in another fach course. The goal is to create an immersive experience. People can remind the memories through the smell in a virtual environment. The smell will be integrated in the helmet. It will trigger different smells according to the location and direction.

Technical list:
Environment: ( photogrammetry or 360 camera or modelling…)
Sound: pure data
Triggers: connect Arduino with unity, send message from unity to Arduino, trigger different smells.
Moving platform: people should move in the virtual environment.
Style: inside the dome: ecological. Outside the dome: cyberpunk.
