Satisfaction makes people love watching pimple popping videos. I am also one of them who will immediately click on any video with anything like “Long and Satisfying Blackhead Extractions” in the title. However, satisfaction is keeping me to go further. It makes me want to persuade people around me to join and watch it with me. A lot of people hate it and my friends call me a psycho because I am so obsessed with it sometime but I don’t care because their reactions are something that make me satisfy.
This project, I want to do something fun by romanctizing this kind of video and soften its mood and tone in order to make it easier to watch for my friends and others so I can get more reaction from them.

At first I have to admit that I wanted to create this project because I just want to do something fun and something I like. How I am going to edit the videos? What are the songs I’m going to put? Or can the video that I will edit persuade people to watch pimple popping and get satisfy with me?
It turned out that, this project affects me the most. Every time I distort the pictures, put some pastel colors on it, or put some cheesy and romantic songs in the crazy-gross videos, it made me think that I am covering the truth that we are gross bags of fluids and disgusting shit under our skin. This might be the fun way for me to accept that we all are horrible. If we don’t wash our bodies or cover them with perfume or fancy cloths, we are all the same. And in one day we will be decayed by time.

Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>

DESCRIPTION<br>
Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them.
The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts (literary, visual, musical and performing arts).
In the visual arts, to appropriate means to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects of human-made visual culture. A notable example are the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp.

But when is appropriation a homage, when is it art and when is it just plain plagiarism? And what are the effects of technology on this ongoing appropriation? Now that boundaries of authenticity and originality are even more blurred, artists (indeed anyone) can recycle and re-upload images, text and audio material more quickly and easily than ever before. Sampling, remixing and mashups proliferate online, and allow people to even adopt a social media profile that appropriates or parodies a well-known persona.

In this course we will look at contemporary artistic strategies of appropriation. We will discuss artforms like Post-Internet art that embraces meme-culture, or music styles like Vapourwave that appropriates 1980s and 1990s styles of mood music.

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create artistic works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

CRITERIA FOR PASSING<br><br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

LANGUAGE<br>
The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.

Being a foreigner in my very first month here in Germany, I found it quite hard to get in a society. Although I tried to open up my self to others around me, I still felt like I did not belong to any of groups here. Moreover, I also had a feeling of having nothing in common and not connect to others.

One day I traveled by myself to Berlin. And experienced in a warmhearted situation which told me that people can connect to each other just by yawning.
Refference Story in Berlin

One day I traveled by myself to Berlin. I took an S Bahn and sat on the seat that 4 people have to face each other; One read a book, one was busy with his phone, one looked outside a window and I just sat and looked around.
Suddenly, a guy who read a book started to yawn, the guy sat opposite him yawned, then the other woman and then me. We all unconsciously yawned after others who sat there. And then at the end of the yawning contagious finished, we all put every activity that we were doing away and looked to each other, then from out of nowhere everyone started to laugh.
At that short moment, I felt like there was something connect we all together. Just like we were connected by an invisible chain of yawning contagious. Although it was a very short moment, it made me felt so warm-hearted and also felt like I belong to the society. This short moment means a lot to me because it was the turning point that made me want to still carry on.

Research & Review

After did some consulting sessions with my mentors, I came back to do some research about yawning contagious and found that some credible scientists said that we yawn after someone not because of we are tired or sleepy, but it is a primitive social behavior of human when we would like to share empathy and emotion to a group. Therefore, it is somehow related to my story and my feeling toward the yawning contagious.
To express this feeling of my own, to show invisible chain that can connect people together and also to express my wonder that why can't people just connect to others so easily just like the yawning contagious does?
I would like to create an installation art containing 1 screen showing VDO looping of people and animal yawning with sound. It would be a close installation that allows one person visit at a time. And if a visitor happens to yawn after the VDO, they will get recorded and put into the VDO loop in order to continue the invisible chain which connects people by yawning.

Currently, we are living in the “authenticity searching” era where people seek out authenticity in the digital world and at the same time claim that they are the authentic ones. But how does one know what or the better question who is truly authentic?

This experimental performance project is created to portray that there is no such a thing as everyone’s truth. My truth might not be your truth and yours might not be mine, no matter how hard we try to convince everyone else to believe in what we believe is true. That is because the criteria that we use to measure the authenticity are our past experiences, our perspectives, our environments, and ourselves.

Thus, do you believe what we have written above is true?

----

Inspiration
My inspiration for this project is from the movie Rashomon(1950), a Japanese film from a Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. I remember being surprised by how mysterious I got from this movie. After watching this movie since I was 20, I still find Rashomon to be a beautiful and interesting movie. The director used the quality of the cinema to examine the nature of truth and the darker side of human nature.
Rashomon is a story of telling a story of a crime which happened in a small village in Japan. The crime was a death of a samurai and in this movie, you will see 4 characters, a bandit, samurai’s wife, samurai ghost and a woodcutter, telling 4 different stories of the same event. The admitted that she was the one who killed the samurai while someone blamed others. Who would you believe? And who do you think was guilty and deserve to be executed?

For my very first time watching this movie, I was only focusing on finding a killer. I tried to guess and argue with my friends a lot of weather who killed the samurai. Five years later, I watched it again and now I saw something else. I saw that the intention of the writer and the director were not to let their audiences investigate weather who was the killer but they really want to show the darker side of human as well as to examine the nature of truth.

Human beings are unable to be honest with themselves about themselves. They cannot talk about themselves without embellishing (Akira Kurosawa, 1950)
This statement from the director was very strong yet have been encouraging me to research more about truth. Up until now, my searching is still continuing. I have found some but I do not know if it is a true definition of truth or just opinions from their perspectives.

Not only Rashomon inspired me to do this experimental project but its influence can also be seen in media nowadays as you can see in a lot of movies or cartoon or even TV series where the shows character flashbacked and tell you different options of the same event. For example, GONE GIRL (2014), HOODWINKED! (2005), PREDESTINATION (2014), COURAGE UNDER FIRE (1996) etc. These contemporary examples have contradictory versions of the same event through multiple viewpoints shows the versatility of truth and the power of individual perception.

From all works and literature review, the most concept that captured my interest as well as inspired me the most is from The Social Construction of Reality book by Peter L. Berger, Thomas Luckmann. This book is talking about the concept of social reality which believes that humans can not directly perceive the truth, but it must be done through the medium, senses and human’s perceptions which have been constructed by social. Therefore, what human believe is true is a world that has been created and interpreted to a certain degree.
Concept development
This experimental project began with a question How could we trust what we see now in everyday life when ordinary people with mobile cameras could be like a powerful media house?
While a story of pictures or video could be distorted just a blink of an eye by just change its caption.
I started this experiment by telling my classmates that I was going to show them 3 different photos and told different stories one photo by one photo. But actually what I did was I told contradictory versions of the same photo.

After finished this experimental I found out that most of the people allow truth to be inside a small frame of picture or video. We never knew what is outside the frame or even what happened before or after recording. So I decided to create an experimental live performance where I invited audiences to witness it from the beginning of the performance until the end.

First intention
I would like to show different perspectives on this storytelling to audiences. Therefore, there will be a 360-degree stage in the middle and 4 groups of seat organized in 4 directions. The performance will run exactly the same in four rounds. Audiences would be asked to rotate themselves to another direction. There will be a screen in each direction showing different story captions except the last direction where audiences will face the performance without any caption.

I have tried this interface with some of my friends, unfortunately, it turned out that audience didn’t want to be rotated to another direction too often.

The second idea
Winterwerkschau Exhibition, February 2018

So I tried to minimize my first idea but still keeping the main message about examining the nature of truth and portray perspectives of human from a story of a girl frustrated on finding and building her truth.
Truth is something very subjective so in this performance, I intended to find some object that can represent the truth. After I had been searching for some time, I decided to represent different sizes of boxes as truth because to me, the truth is something very straight and precise in every way just so the box. The most important thing is when you stack different size of boxes up and put one edge together you will see how straight and precise the boxes are from one perspective, but from other perspectives, it will be like a mess just like the concept of truth and human perspective.

At first, I wanted the LED screen background to be just only white color. But while we were rehearsing I tried to look for interesting sounds to play along with the performance and after I watched the playback I found out that what was going on on the background LED screen was very interesting. It was the same context of frustrated on finding something, so I chose to do live google searching for truth along with the performance. The live searching had no plan and no keywords I just typed “truth” and then let Google take me to somewhere.
-	Wrapping boxes were something that I should not do in this performance as it was so distracting and can also give other meaning to audiences.
-	Using only one actress was not strong enough to send the core message of this performance to audiences.
-	The performance might look a bit too old fashion and need more interesting idea to add into the performance, for example, interesting technology like VR, movement tracking system etc. to make the statement of this performance stringer.

----

Learning from this experimental project
-	Wrapping boxes were something that I should not do in this performance as it was so distracting and can also give other meaning to audiences.
-	Using only one actress was not strong enough to send the core message of this performance to audiences.
-	The performance might look a bit too old fashion and need more interesting idea to add into the performance, for example, interesting technology like VR, movement tracking system etc. to make the statement of this performance stringer.
- I have to consider more about the quality for the video. At first, I have no idea that I can borrow a good quality camera from our facuty, so I have to use my low-quality one.

From all the idea I have been developing in this experimental project, I will keep it as a metaphor to develop it further in the future. As well as mistakes I have made, I would take it as a learning and adapt it to my next step.

----
Some of works and literature review

From all works and literature review, the most concept that captured my interest as well as inspired me the most is from The Social Construction of Reality book by Peter L. Berger, Thomas Luckmann. This book is talking about the concept of social reality which believes that humans can not directly perceive the truth, but it must be done through the medium, senses and human’s perceptions which have been constructed by social. Therefore, what human believe is true is a world that has been created and interpreted to a certain degree.

Therefore, what human believe is true is a world that has been created and interpreted to a certain degree.

The second idea Winterwerkschau Exhibition, February 2018

My inspiration of this project is from the movie Rashomon(1950), a Japanese film from a Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.

This experimental project began with a question How could we trust what we see now on everyday life when ordinary people with mobile cameras could be like a powerful media house?
While story of pictures or video could be distorted just a blink of an eye by just change its caption.
I started this experiment by telling my classmates that I was going to show them 3 different photos and told different story one photo by one photo. But actually what I did was I told contradictory versions of the same photo.

After finished this experimental I found out that most of people allow truth to be inside a small frame of picture or video. We never known what is outside the frame or even what happened before or after recording. So I decided to create an experimental live performance where I invited audience to witness it from the beginning of the performance until the end.

Lecturer: Jörg Brinkmann<br>
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS<br>
Date: Thursdays 17:00-20:30<br>
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>
First meeting: Thursday, October 12th 2017, 17:00<br>

<br style="clear: both">

We live in weird times, where Internet memes could start a Third World War, where the Internet offers the hope of transcultural communication and at the same time creates an uncontrollable chaos of shitstorms and cyberbullying that makes it seem like we are
thrown ‘back into the future’ of the digital Middle Ages.

How do we define authenticity and sincerity in times of fake news and post-truth politics? When laptops and smartphones become an important part of self-fulfillment and identity, when everybody can be a ‘news’ reporter, who can you believe to be sincere?

This course asks the recurring, ever haunting question of what is authentic. Has the search for it always been a deceptive road? How real does authenticity need to be today?

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create performative works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

CRITERIA FOR PASSING<br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project that can be in the form of a performance, video work or installation for example. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

LANGUAGE<br>
The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.

APPLICATION<br>

How can be sure what we see is true? As power of the media got transferred from a handful of media houses to ordinary people with cellphone cameras, it doesn't stop pictures and videos that we see from being more truthful.

Pictures and videos can be distorted by the narratives, so do we need to be increasingly suspicious of the so-called truth that we see each day even more?

Description
The artist's lab is a project module for students who wish to work on their own topics accompanied by intensive discussion on contemporary artistic approaches in art, media, posthumanism, interactivity, technology and matter. We expect you to have your own artistic agenda and want to support with knowledge, technology and discourse. GMU offers access to our labs (Performance Platform and DIY Biolab) to develop ideas in suitable environments. If you are interest to work with interactivity or in working with the Performance Platform you should already have taken part at werkmodules or fachmodules in programming and/or electronics. Furthermore you should take our werk- and fachmodules during the semester accompanying the project (->). You might find out that a project with people tracking can take two semesters.
If you are interested in working with our DIY Biolab, please choose the relevant fachmodules from my co-workers.
The module expects you to be self-motivated and self-organized. It offers a culture of discussion.
Part of the module is a lecture on media art which will be announced separately. People from other study programs are also very welcome, just be aware that we do not offer strong guidance.
