====Fever Controller====

There is a kind of algea named snow algea, also called watermelon snow. It is algea that is reddish or pink in color, with the slight scent of a fresh watermelon. This type of algea is common during the summer in alpine and coastal polar regions worldwide. <br/>
I want to make it very sensitive about the temperature in genetic level. In normal times it is white, but if the temperature rise up just a little, it turn to pink in color, then release oxygen and absorb heat. It can be used in the fever time. I'm trying to relate it into a neckless. When man get fever, others will soon see his/her neckless turn to pink, then adopt some measures. Moreover it also can controll the temperature in physical way.<br/>
====Antialcoholic Drug====

This project is about drunk driving. I want to find some bacteriums which like alcohol, using synbio technology to let them anlyze alcohol with drunkers' breathing air and make antialcoholic drug. If it is possible, there will be no trouble on drunk driving. This machine will be installed in the car.<br/>
====Smoke Killer====

It is for breathing in second hand smoke. My purpose is to make some bacteriums sesitive to smoke, it can feel the smoke further away than human being feels. And then it release some gas or smells to provite people from smelling the Secondhand smoke. I think it also can be a neckless, in where it near the nose and can be an adornment.<br/>

'''The SynBio Supermarket'''

Enter the synthetic biology supermarket, smell it, see it, touch it, feel it. Buy and change your life. Feel what synthetic biology could change in our every day life.

The exhibition aims to create an awareness for presence and possible futures of synthetic biology products by putting already existing and far-out in the future applications next to each other – on supermarket shelfs, in walk-in environments and access points to virtual representations.

The synthetic biology supermarket is a public engagement project originally being developed for the iGEM competition in november 2010.
For the iGEM the supermarket is based on a webshop and a vending machine as physical display. Based on that origin a “real” supermarket will be developed for the exhibition.

The supermarket will offer a range of about 30 consumer products that employ the means of synthetic biology.

The supermarkets product range will cover already available goods, products that are implied by iGEM projects of previous years and items developed by our Team. The latter will be the majority of the offered products. All products offered in the synthetic biology supermarket will have one thing in common:
A clear relation to synthetic biology.

In the exhibition these products will be represented by touchable prototypes in 'natural' environment and/or with the use of images, videos and textual product descriptions. This shall stimulate engagement with synthetic biology by communicating its concepts and giving information about its methods and possibilities and by this confronting with the social questions that rise with that topic.

The synthetic biology supermarket is an art project that is developed in the context of the project module “synthetic biology” in the summer semester 2010 at the chair “Gestaltung medialer Umgebungen“ supervised by Bernd Hopfengärtner, Sebastian Hundertmark und Prof. Ursula Damm in cooperation with Prof. Roland Eils from the university of Heidelberg.

In the project fifteen bachelor and master students from the study programs of media design, media art, media informatics, art education, psychology, philosophy, biology and physics work together.

'''The objects'''

As the project is still in development the following list is not complete and the pictures show the products as a work in progress.

'''PERFECT BODY''' living sex machine (Mila Burghardt)

The body as piece of clothing. Naturally to choose from a collection of noses, breasts and ears every morning. Buyable in every drugstore the bodily parts are properties of our every day life. With the help of the 'active bacteria lotion' the body gets disintegrated in the upper structure, new body parts of the collection may be attached and adhere in a minute.

Latex casts, conceived as prototypes for future body part commodities, produced with industrially grown human tissue. And a video commercial.

Width: 2,0 m; height: 2,5 m; needed technology: CRT-TV, dvd-player, bus bar

'''My Flower''' (Yu Xiaorui)

„My Flower“ sets up a system between people and flower(or plants) at in-door-area. A sensor thats installed in the human body sends data about the mood of the host. The flower reacts to that with giving off smells the smell thats needed to improve the feelings.

Interactive installation with plants and computer.

Width: 1,0 m; lenght: 1,0 m; height 1,20 m. Needed technology: Computer, bus bar.

'''ko*ko*ro*mo''' (Vanessa Walk)

"No more...allergies? No more...problems with fungi and wet house walls?
No more...high heating costs? No more...cleaning up? No problem!
As a superhygienic moss, ko*ko*ro*mo will grant your wishes while keeping your living space green".
ko*ko*ro*mo by itself is a project concerning about genetical engineering of plants from a natural habitat and their use in our households.

Installation will contain a table setting and a chair covered with moss,
and also 3-5 posters on the wall (ca. 60x90).

Width: 1,5 m; length: 1,2 m; hight: 1,5 to 2,0 m

'''A new plant''' (Lu Jiayuan)

The plant’s living depends on the food and water that human eating. It can absorb the excessive calories that human intake. It connects with the human body by blood vessels. It’s not very big plant, so it’s easy to carry them.
When the energy of body is in shortage, the plant can quickly supplement the energy that the human body needs. When there is excess energy, the plant will save. In this way, we can avoid many diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and so on. And everyone can have a more healthy and better body.

Some photos on the wall. Maybe a short animation, if I finish that.(A computer to play the animation.)
Width: 1,5 m; length: 1,2 m; hight: 1,5 to 2,0 m.

'''Magic Mirror''' (Dong Liang)

Keeping beauty – lifelong!
The magic mirror analyses your hair, putting out a health check report and produces the pill you need to stay healthy and beautiful.

'''Primal Sound''' (Christian Schröder)

Record made of DNA, playing random-music.
Argarose model played on a record player with built in speakers.
Record shelf with various records and description on the sleeve.

Width:0,3 m; length: 0,3 m, height: 0,3 m; needed technology: bus bar

'''The Right Level''' (Jan Dittrich)

The Project deals with health, marketing and the idea of body extensions. I will design a fictive campaign for extensional organs which provide medicine produced via synbio technology - like a biorecator-to-go, designed for your specific needs. Pills would only be taken to configure the bioreactor.

'''Bad good karma - das killer spiel''' (Bastian Bügler)

BAD GOOD KARMA is a game that can be played alone as well as in groups. Every round is about saving the world, taking bad karma upon yourself in order to protect the ecosystem. Each round played is one that made a difference, a good chance step up to your biosocial responsibilities, feel the heavy burden and have fun at the same time. If you fail there is some probability that our biosphere will be altered, forever. This game is all about proud, courageous decisions and tough choices.

Please consider ethical dilemmata before and after, but not during a running game. Once the game starts there is no time for words and doubts, stop whining and do what has to be done. You and your team members are the best human species has to offer in this time of crisis. There is high risk - there may be even pain and even casualties but all those weigh nothing compared to the honor of having once more saved the ecosphere and the day.

Contained in the game:
# genetically modified crickets (glowing in the dark).
# fly swatters (electrical charged).
# groundzero launching-platform
# countermeassure-initiation-timer

Setting up:

Physical preparations:
# warm up your muscles.
# stretch your tendons
# prepare mentally for the kill.

beginners: (low biodiverity hazard)
# close all doors and windows.
# clear the room from obstacles.
# center the launching platfom onto a flat plane.
# place the countermeassure-initiation-timer right next to the launching platform.
# get yourself and your team armed and ready with one or two fly swatters.

intermediate: (medium biodiverity hazard)
# skip closing doors and windows.
# forget clearing your room.
# center the launching platfom onto a flat plane.
# place the countermeassure initiation timer right next to the launching platform.
# get yourself and your team armed and ready with one or two fly swatters.

andvanced: (high biodiversity hazard as well as high probability of selfinflicted injuries and colateral damage to you and your team mates)

# open all windows and doors.
# arrange lots of stuff on the floor of the room.
# center the launching platfom onto a flat plane (table, desk or floor)
# place the countermeassure initiation timer right next to the launching platform.
# wait until it is realy dark (night)
# wait - get the fly swatters once the countermeassure initiation timer goes off. Alternatively you may also skip the professional hunting equipment and instead use your bare hands or the next object with your range.

Playing (rules of engagement)

# place one ore more crickets onto the ground zero launching platform.
# initiate the countermeassure timer. It is important to follow protocoll since the initiation movement should scare the cricket to flee, following its evil agenda, to gain freedom and build a family.

Wait until the cricket has left the platform and the countermeassures alarm has gone off. Now the beast is on the run, the biosphere is in danger, a biological super-gau is immanent. Concentrate, feel the pressure - the world depends on you to win. Arm up and eliminate the thread. For once there is no time to dicuss, no air to be wasted - kill a few to save many. Be aware when playin in the dark, especially when playing in groups or crowded rooms. In every war there are casualties, friendly fire is not to be taken personal, injuries caused by collision with furniture, walls or team mates may leave scars and painfull wounds of honor.

'''ReCoBRAIN''' (Laura-Nadine Schuhmacher & Philipp Bayer)

Neuronal implant from living nerve cells. Once injected it connects parts of the memory.
Installation with passport photograph cabine as servicepoint for the ReCoBRAIN operation. Cabine, Video, Printer.

Width: 2,0 m; length: 2,0 m; height: 2,0 m; needed technology:

'''CooGoo''' (Mila Burghardt)

Cook Good! With the help of CooGoo never anything in your kitchen will mess up again. When your food is about to scorch an alarm will warn you and automatically switch off the stove.

(Animation-)Video, Screen in pan

Width: 0,4 m; length 0,4 m. Needed technology: bus bar

'''Vending machine''' (Christian Schröder, Mila Burghardt)

the quick access to some of the products. What you get are kits with petridish, DNA Sequences and liquids that allow to grow the product at home.

width: 0,80 m; height 1,20 m; needed techology: bus bar

This movie explains my main ideas for that...please note: its not a concept for colours. in my imagination its mostly white... one thing I forgot to exlain is the "chat" button - in my self-experiment with 'second life' I experienced that its really strange and a good effect to meet people virtual, it happens the same than in real "how close may I go? Who is that? Will she/he talk to me?" so I think its great to make it possible that users see who else is online and to give them a possiblity to chat with each other. it might be also a nice thing for us to influence/to interact with the users...
As known from computers as a personal key to use the fingerprint there should be a small interface next to your computer which analyses your body needs and genetical code.
According to this you get special commercials in the supermarket
e.g. for vitamines, diet-helpers or anti-transpirants

Online: next to the computer there is this interface.

Offline (real life supermarket): when entereing the shop you get a shopping basket, at the handle bar there is a sensor which analyses these things. With a W-Lan system it sends it to the server which coordinates the data of all the shoppers. On a small display in the shopping basket you get special informations.
Aditionally if you pass by the light in the supermarket spots those products that are 'good' for you.

As a special service the system makes shopping to a social event. It locates persons that would fit very good with your genetic material or your current feeling. So you get the advice (online as a pop-up window, offline as a note ob your screen) 'have a look in corridor 4, section B you may find...(and you have the possibility to contact this person, so also in the online version you see who else is shopping at the same time).

When entering the supermarket you also may give yourself a profile, which works as a filter.
(e.g. show me only woman between 30-40, not having had sex in the last 48 hours, smoking but in general healthy.
Or an extra as a visualization of how a child with this person would look like...
..to be continued...

Even if I dont want … I always come back to the idea of a „second life“-market – it really has some good options – seeing the other, having the possibility to interact, really going through the world and so on. and maybe its easier to use existing systems than to create something completely new... but i am not really happy with this thought)
Will she/he talk to me?" so I think its great to make it possible that users see who else is online and to give them a possiblity to chat with each other. it might be also a nice thing for us to influence/to interact with the users...

and here now some links that are somehow connected with my ideas:
(onlineshop with a mix of sketches and real pictures, i dont like it that way)
====Fever Controller====

There is a kind of algea named snow algea, also called watermelon snow?
====Antialcoholic Drug====

Hello everyone.I'm Yu Xiaorui
http://web.uni-weimar.de/medien/wiki/images/Yu_Xiaorui.jpg<br/>

This is the page for my project -- '''MY FLOWER'''
====About Pheromone====

I try to find something about Pheromones on the internet.<br/>
There are kinds of Pheromones given off by animals.<br/>
But, as far as I know, there might not be that many from human.<br/>
The only one I am sure is sexual pheromone. <br/>
If any one of you know more about it,Please tell me!<br/>
Thanks!

====Thanks Vanessa====
Thank you for your reply!

You'r quite right, and your comment is just about my dilemma.<br/>
On one hand, I like the plant to adjust its scent for people without some intentional actions of the owner. So I design a sensor pill in the body.<br/>
But, on the other hand, I don't think to implant sensor is a good idea.So I think about a water pot later. But to use it, it's against my first requirement.

You suggestion about Pheromone is really good.If it works, that will be an ideal solution to my project.<br/>
but I still don't know how much can it do. Or if the plants can take reaction to human Pheromone.(Maybe it's possible with Synthetic biology)<br/>
I really think my Short knowledge of life science is a problem :(

I actually think about to use manual remote control to stop the plant or do something opposite when the automatic response is not what you want.Maybe I didn't make myself clear during the presentation.

Anyway,Thank you so much!It really helps！
'''<span style="color:#9ACD32">'My Flower' response

Hey Yu,

I really liked the idea of your plant producing scents when people have certain problems. And I also liked the fact that the plant would produce the scent
even in situations when we are not doing anything in particular with the plant itself.

It would be nice the plant would work without to much workload of it's owner.
Because if your are stressed or ill or tired,
I don't think you will have the nerves to programming your plant.
It takes time!!!

The problem to let anybody know how you feel today, is not that big thing.
There are so many meaning to essentials oils that it's hard to guess whats wrong with the plants owner.

For example lavender is used for aromatic therapie when:

- you are stressed and sleepless
- you are sick and injured, because its antiseptic
- you are depressed

But without any problem it can also be:

- good for your heart and skin
- relaxing, refreshing and stimulating

So I wouldn't care to much about that. Because there are a lot of people working with essential oils in their living area today *my mom for example* and I never heard 'ah Mrs. Walk thats lemongrass...are you feeling sick?'.
Most people would think, 'ah that smells nice, really refreshing'.

But Sebastian is right, it should be possible to tell the plant to stop or to do the opposite of what it is doing already.

I thought may be *yeah may be* pheromones would be a good solution to it. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pheromone Wikipedia: pheromones]

As you might know they are hormones normally found in body fluids like sweat or saliva to give others information about our body or attendance for sexual reproduction. Also plants use them to deliver special messages from one to another. May be you can give your plant when you don't like it to produce any scent or to produce the opposite scent a special mix of pheromones to let them know what you want.

I hope that I was able to be of assistance to you.
(ahhh and please ignore the misspellings ^^haha)
====<p><font size="3">Further idea</font></p>====
I thought about all the comments everybody made that day.
And I come up with some new ideas.

Firstly, I try to discard the mechanical part of the project, try to combine the analyze function to the plant.<br/>
But, unfortunately, I didn't find any thing can prove that plants can detecting data of human.<br/>
And to tell one's emotion by analyzing is quite demanding and complex.<br/>
I think plants can only collect some external data such as temperature and breath, which is not sufficient.<br/>
So, I think it may still need some technical support out side form the plant.

Then, given the suggestion form Sebastian,This process should not be automatically. The owner should decide when to take the test.<br/>
Based on this, What come up into my mind is that I can use a water pot instead.<br/> Every time people feel like to have a aromatherapy, they just water the plant.<br/>
And I think it can use the technology from the yogurt pot.<br/>
Every time you grab the handle it will take sample and start to analyze.

Other than that, I read the article about artificial life on wiki.<br/>
I don't know if we can make a super smart plant which knows the owner's mood and do some thing for him.

'''My introduction today'''

1. My Flower sets up a system between people and flower(or plants) at in-door-area.

2. Explain 3 questions:<br/>
a. Why flowers smell good?
--Because some cells produce Chemicals.
b. How can we tell somebody's mood?
--By analyze body data.
c. What's the connection between Fragrance and mood?
--Aromatherapy.

3. Explain how My Flower works.<br/>
a. It make up with two part -- the sensor and the plant.
b. The sensor will be installed into human body. It will analyze host's data
form time to time to tell their mood.
c. Then the data will send to a receiver bond to the plant.
d. The plant composed with various genes from different flowers. So it can
give off different smells as need. And these cells can be controlled by
computer with electricity.
e. According to the host's mood, certain cells will act to make fragrance.
Then the host get feed back through the air.
f. It can be controlled manually as well.

----

'''Comments from others:'''

1. Sebastian suggests me to change the mechanical sensor part to a more Biological way to get the host's data.

2. Pro. Damm said besides the decoration usage, flower also play a gift role in peoples' social life. Maybe I can pay some attention combining the aroma
function with this aspect of it.

3. Dominik: I completely agree with Sebastian concerning the sensor part. As a rough suggestion, again from the scientific side: What about genetically modified neurons? They would recognize temperature changes, hormone concentration and other thinks in the human blood. As neurons are able to actively change their cell membrane potential, they could be used to transfer information to a computer via electric pulses.

'''<span style="color:#FF69B4">Please give me you opinions and suggestion!</span>'''<br>Thanks a lot!<br>
