White Noise is a term used to describe a background made of noises and or music that is easy to listen to. That is not what this is. This is a layered, multi audio, slightly off-beat project.
I used low-quality concert videos of multiple performances of PVRIS's song "White Noise" and their audio; appropriating at the same time the videos and the music, just as the videos are appropriating the respective concerts and the band.

Those videos were used in a multilayered way to make my own music video. To give it a 3D effect I carefully edited the official music video and a professional recording of a stripped version of the song to match the timeline of my own music video. I decided to use intense colors in my music video and black and white in the other two.
Then I turned this into a video installation using the theme of old televisions from the official music video as my medium. The videos are supposed to be watch next to each other playing simultaneously, with the video in color in the middle.
Date: Thursdays, 17:00 - 20:30
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)
First meeting: Thursday, April 12th 2018, 17:00

'''DESCRIPTION'''
Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them.
The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts (literary, visual, musical and performing arts).
In the visual arts, to appropriate means to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects of human-made visual culture. A notable example are the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp.

But when is appropriation a homage, when is it art and when is it just plain plagiarism? And what are the effects of technology on this ongoing appropriation? Now that boundaries of authenticity and originality are even more blurred, artists (indeed anyone) can recycle and re-upload images, text and audio material more quickly and easily than ever before. Sampling, remixing and mashups proliferate online, and allow people to even adopt a social media profile that appropriates or parodies a well-known persona.

In this course we will look at contemporary artistic strategies of appropriation. We will discuss artforms like Post-Internet art that embraces meme-culture, or music styles like Vapourwave that appropriates 1980s and 1990s styles of mood music.

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create artistic works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

'''CRITERIA FOR PASSING'''

In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

'''LANGUAGE'''
The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS

I've always been fascinated by trying to find out what we are made of. Us, human beings; what are we made of? Flesh and bones and DNA. But that's not what defines us. Do our actions define us? Genuine human connections do. How do we interact with each other?

Often things happen too fast for us to be able to properly analyze them. We are too busy, too overwrought; the world spins faster every day; always something newer, better, faster.

So, what happens when you put a group of people with established relationships in front of a camera and try to go back to basics? They take off most of their clothes, you give them acrylic paint to express and play with and then you just... shoot everything in slow motion? What happens behind the scenes? In those short moments where the camera is rolling and they just... are?

Shooting without audio, we are forced to concentrate on the visual. On every detail, on every millisecond.
Rubatosis is "the unsettling awareness of your own heartbeat". It can occur in moments of quiet or in moments of fear and panic. You become aware, you realize you are alive. Your heart works. I tried to reflect this in my work.
The results are inconclusive. Things are very vague, but I'd like to be cryptic about this. What are we made of? We might never know.

Lecturer: [https://www.uni-weimar.de/kunst-und-gestaltung/wiki/Jörg_Brinkmann Jörg Brinkmann]
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS
Date: Thursdays 17:00-20:30
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)
First meeting: Thursday, October 12th 2017, 17:00

We live in weird times, where Internet memes could start a Third World War, where the Internet offers the hope of transcultural communication and at the same time creates an uncontrollable chaos of shitstorms and cyberbullying that makes it seem like we are
thrown ‘back into the future’ of the digital Middle Ages.

How do we define authenticity and sincerity in times of fake news and post-truth politics? When laptops and smartphones become an important part of self-fulfillment and identity, when everybody can be a ‘news’ reporter, who can you believe to be sincere?

This course asks the recurring, ever haunting question of what is authentic. Has the search for it always been a deceptive road? How real does authenticity need to be today?

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create performative works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

'''CRITERIA FOR PASSING'''
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project that can be in the form of a performance, video work or installation for example. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

'''LANGUAGE'''
The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.
