First meeting: Thursday, 11.04.2019, 15:15

==Description==

“Okay, this world is getting weirder and weirder and I’m hearing simulation theory almost everywhere” (someone on reddit.com)

“The simulation hypothesis or simulation theory proposes that all of reality, including the Earth and the universe, is in fact an artificial simulation, most likely a computer simulation. Some versions rely on the development of a simulated reality, a proposed technology that would seem realistic enough to convince its inhabitants the simulation was real. The hypothesis has been a central plot device of many science fiction stories and films.” (Wikipedia on simulation hypothesis)

Nick Bostrom predicts in his book “Are you living in a computer simulation?” from 2003 that through enormous amounts of computing power that will be available in the future, later generations might run detailed simulations of their forebears or of people like their forebears.

With this information in mind, let’s turn it around and ask ourselves how a simulation of the far away future would look like. Since the world seems to get weirder and weirder how weird can it get? In the course we will create situations that can be experienced with VR-glasses or presented on video screens.

The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality. Its aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, an increasingly widespread medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication.

The practical part will be an Introduction to the game engine Unity 3D, an introduction to working with HTC Vive VR-glasses, the Oculus GO VR-glasses, as well as introductions to photogrammetry, immersive sound and 360 video, body interaction through tracking, 3D modeling and animation.

We will also look into contemporary and digital art related to recent socio-political and media-philosophical topics. We will create an artistic discourse on the topic of VR which will be presented in the form of individual projects at the end of the semester.

==Description==
Waiting at traffic lights, shopping online, finding a new partner, baking a cake - noticed or unnoticed, everyone is in contact with algorithms each day.

In the class Algorithmic Art we will focus on graphical algorithms and generative art, to learn how to think like a machine. The programming language Processing offers artists and designers the chance to go beyond predefined and often limiting software and allows them to create their very own tools for 2D or 3D graphics production, interactive installations, data manipulation and more. With a simplified syntax, Processing takes down high entry barriers that are usually associated with programming languages. Simple visual results are possible with just a few lines of code, with an open end to more complex output and rule systems.

We will orient ourselves to the pioneering work of early computer artists (”Algorists”) like Vera Molnar, Manfred Mohr or Frieder Nake and use a pen-plotter (self built in class or a ready-made one) to materialize the algorithms we develop in homeworks or in class. Treated topics and programming basics include: 2D shapes and geometry, variables, arrays, loops, randomness, noise, interaction, animation, functions, object orientation, working with data (image, sound, text),...

Further topics depending on interest:webcam interaction, openCV, working with libraries and API’s, 3D graphics, communication (OSC), projection mapping,…

==Description==

'''DESCRIPTION'''<br>
This course emphasises artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality. Its aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, an increasingly widespread medium which
offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication.

The practical part will be an Introduction to Unity 3D and Blender. We will look into contemporary and digital art related to recent sociopolitical and mediaphilosophical topics. We will create an artistic discourse on
the topic of VR which will be presented in the form of individual projects at the end of the semester.

'''CRITERIA FOR PASSING'''<br><br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

'''CRITERIA FOR PASSING'''<br><br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project on the GMU Wiki. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

In WATCHED you find yourself in a dark nothingness, an atmospheric space. In the front there's a light. While you're approaching to it, you see the sillhouettes of people surrounding the light.
As soon as you're inside the light, they're suddenly opening their eyes, the music changes and they and keep staring at you. Their eyes follow you on every step.
My interest was to create an abstract, atmospheric space, where you feel you're anonymous and unseen, but you're watched by an unknown group of people. Being watched by someone is a very interesting experience in VR, since you no longer have the feeling they're starring at the camera (as in a film), but they're directly starring at you.

Lecturer: [https://www.uni-weimar.de/kunst-und-gestaltung/wiki/Jörg_Brinkmann Jörg Brinkmann]<br>
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS<br>
Date: Fri/Sat/Sun 01.-03.12.2017, 11:00 Uhr - 19:00<br>
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>
First meeting: Friday, October 13th 2017, 17:00<br>

<br style="clear: both">

Critical VR experiences acknowledge Virtual Reality to be both a new opportunity and another dilemma.

A critical VR experience designer is informed about the past and present of art, philosophy and activism. She/He embraces and repurposes established strategies from several disciplines to create critical experiences that deconstruct and provoke skepticism of immersive and primarily entertaining user experiences.

This course emphasises artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality. Its aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, an increasingly widespread medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication.

The practical part will be an Introduction into Unity 3D and Blender as well as the technology of the Digital Bauhaus Lab. We will look into contemporary and digital art related to recent socio-political and media-philosophical topics. We will create an artistic discourse on the topic of VR which will be presented in the form of individual projects at the end of the semester.

'''CRITERIA FOR PASSING'''<br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project that can be in the form of a performance, video work or installation for example. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

'''LANGUAGE'''<br>
The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.
