Aesthetics of Macroworlds - An interdisciplinary journey into microscopic worlds using Touchdesigner

Overview:
The seminar uses Microscope to provide footage of surreal Microworlds from biological ecosystems as videofeed for Multimedia installations using the software touchdesigner. The aim is to do a large scale video installation in the Lernraum-Bauhaus and the Digital Bauhaus Lab. Can we see the Microscope as a camera, the scientist as a videographer and the projection of the examination as a form of expanded cinema? We also would like to engage in cooperations with sound-artists.

This seminar introduces students to thematization of the interaction between culture and nature. With the help of macro/micro photography and scientific approaches, both aesthetic and theoretic, the following essential artistic concepts will be taught:
Hors champ - The invisible in the picture
- The term ‘hors champ’ (outside the picture frame) indicates that the picture tells more than it shows. The term mainly refers to film. It directs the focus to what is not directly visible, but is hinted at by the picture frame and the composition.
- This becomes particularly interesting in the macro area: the micro world breaks the indexicality (the direct reference to reality), as the enlargement makes details visible that appear abstract. At the same time, the cadrage remains as a culturally formed organising principle and releases the image from its pure purposefulness

The result of the seminar will be a live performance accompanied by the seminar of Dr. Marcin Pietruszewski.

The seminar will be held in cooperation with Hybrides Lernatelier.

Visualized word embeddings are processes that make it possible to transform words into high-dimensional vectors. Semantic similarities between words are mathematically recorded so that words with similar meanings lie close to each other in a vector space.
My seminars follow a dialectical approach and are designed to combine technical and scientific modules at the Bauhaus University. In this way, critical positions and questions can be developed directly from a technical understanding. The technical knowledge imparted is then contextualised and subjected to critical reflection. Instead of a discussion about pure scientific metaphors or a supposedly objective, uncritical approach to technology, a dialectical cognitive process is initiated.
== Learning to use the tools of the future. ==

The transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will fundamentally change the creative professions, with technology not designed to replace humans but requiring new skills to harness it.

Critical engagement and responsible use of AI tools.

AI systems can be used to generate targeted "fake news" on a large scale, so in order to learn how to use this technology in a responsible way, knowledge that goes beyond the purely technical aspects is needed. A mature and informed approach to sociology and politics is therefore just as important as programming skills. Morals and ethics are basic democratic values of our society and a qualification in these areas could expand the field of work of students in the art and culture sector by essential aspects. Especially at the Bauhaus University, great importance has always been attached to the teaching of human sciences, which therefore forms a perfect basis for an extended knowledge transfer in the field of AI.

== New roles for creatives ==

In the current debates concerning creativity and AI, the views of computer science experts are dominant. However, since they do not have expert knowledge in the field of art and culture, the discourses prevailing there resemble more personal opinions than actual facts. By developing skills in technical and theoretical areas, students will be enabled to contribute to the debate as "experts on creativity" in a direct and informed way.

== Perspectives ==

Starting from technical competence, an ethical-moral compass can subsequently be developed, with which technology can be contextualized in a social, political and cultural context in a scientifically sound manner. In this context, AI is seen as an opportunity to broaden the activity profile of those working in the cultural sector to become a mediator between culture, business, technology and politics and, above all, to inform and involve the general public in these processes. This development therefore calls for training in the creative fields away from production and toward coordination and evaluation.

[[File:AI S pic2.jpg|800px|Diagram]]

== transparency and sustainability ==

The focus of teaching should be on the greatest possible transparency and make all results open source and thus sustainably available. It should also provide as authentic an introduction to the topic as possible. Another building block in this sense is hybrid teaching and learning, which is also under the sign of sustainability.

== teaching and learning==

In the course of dialectical knowledge transfer, a direct combination of technical and scientific modules makes sense. In this way, critical positions and questions can be developed directly from a technical understanding. The technical knowledge imparted can thus be placed directly in a critical context. Instead of a discussion about metaphors in pure science or about a supposedly objective and uncritical approach to technology, a dialectical cognitive process will thus be initiated. The didactic process leads away from active action and the direct production of cultural goods towards a reflexive attitude and their expert evaluation.

== perspectives ==

== transparency and sustainability ==

The focus of teaching should be on the greatest possible transparency and make all results open source and thus sustainably available. It should also provide as authentic an introduction to the topic as possible. Another building block in this sense is hybrid teaching and learning, which is also under the sign of sustainability.

== teaching and learning==

The primary focus will be on the software TouchDesigner, providing participants with practical skills alongside theoretical insights.

The seminar will consist of hybrid lectures that explore the theoretical underpinnings of modern media workflows, situated within a historical context of media theory. These discussions will draw on key concepts from notable theorists, providing a framework for understanding the evolution of video design practices.

Following the lectures, students will engage in a practical tutorium led by Belcim Yavuz in the faculty’s computer pool, where they will gain hands-on experience with advanced workstations. This combination of theory and practice will equip students with a comprehensive understanding of current industry standards and workflows in video and 3D design.

In 'Brume', the artist duo Michael Kugler and Sebastian Wolf investigate immateriality by coaxing fog into a semi-geometrical, self-organizing form. The viewer becomes a catalyst for disturbance, generating turbulences that not only illustrate the carrying power of the air, but upset a perceived equilibrium, and reveal the spatial and temporal volatility of such a phenomenon. 'Brume' operates in the margins between ubiquity and the finite, symmetry and the amorphous, transience and permanence, and gesturing at the paradox of immateriality.

Due to constant metaphorization, the public debate on "artificial intelligence" is separated from its technological reality and is lost between speculation, PR campaigns, and personal opinions.

The seminar aims to differentiate the underlying discursive fields and define terms derived from their technical context without creating new tropes.

Therefore ”AI beyond mystification” focuses on the theoretical and practical foundations of "Artificial Intelligence" and explores the subfields of Machine Learning by penetrating its ”black box” and deriving the terms directly from the technical spheres of knowledge (textbooks, papers, and programs). This knowledge, that emerges from statistics (data science) and network technology (the internet of things and cloud-computing), which always tries to keep itself "up to date" and thus strips away any historicity, gets recontextualized and transferred into different theoretical discourses (Philosophy of technology and critical theory). The course imparts both technically sound knowledge and philosophical reflection on the same. Thereby, no static discourses are set, but technology itself is understood as an operative-rational reality, which is not least expressed in the constitution of media in relation to the human subject.

With such technologies, it is possible to create media environments or digital milieus that are highly user-specific. This digital milieus separate its user from the outer world, in the sense of ramifications and references, and keep him/her isolated in a homogeneous information structure.

An analysis of pure media artifacts such as image, sound, text, etc. without illuminating the technological ideas behind them is thus of little use since these pursue a purely ideological purpose, leading to a surveillance capitalism. Therefore, the seminar follows the subject's relationship to the self-shifting media fields, which directly affect his/her behavior, exterior, and position, leading to the reconstitution of his/her communication.

To understand this novel form of media generation, an ontology is needed which does not constitute the relevant fields of discourse, in the form of a common critique of technology. In contrast, the Seminar will expose the formal and static structures, to an open, pluralistic discourse which, while remaining argumentatively coherent in itself, does not lead to a dogmatic point of view.

We will create a interactive Audio-Visual Installation with the Software ”Touchdesigner”, that will be shown in the form of an event at the end of the semester. The sound component is on an equal footing with the video and was developed in a constant dialogue between the artists. Therefore musicians are very welcome in this seminar! The dramaturgy follows a clear line and combines numerous abstract forms of visualization and programming. The seminar will use the state-of-the-art technology of „Lernraum.Bauhaus” in a creative and experimental way.

The topic of AI is discussed in the media in terms of artificial consciousness, while the actual machine-learning applications have long been an integral part of the success of IT giants. To understand this technology, it is essential to understand the principles of modern network architecture and its data structure and transmission. The course will take a practical approach to this topic and then lead into an informed discussion that will go beyond the opinions of "gift book philosophers".

The course gives an introduction to machine learning and its programming in Python using Nvidia Jetson Nano Computers set up as a Cloud-Cluster, which we set up in the seminar.

Example for a subject of discussion: Sentiment Analysis

There is currently no scientific consensus on a definition of emotions. But for sure they cannot be measured like temperature or height. They heavily differ individually through complex cultural, political, and historical influences.

So keep in mind that, by using such technology without any layer of reflection and critique, you transport reductionistic behavioral ideas that are the reason for discrimination and the disadvantage of people that don't fall within the statistical norm of such machine learning systems.

Content:

Every student will be provided with a NvidiaJetson Nano Developer Kit, from the university (as a rental). https://developer.nvidia.com/embedded/jetson-nano-developer-kit

You get a basic understanding of:

- Linux operating system - Network structures - Video processing (OpenCV and ffmpeg)

- machine learning (basic models) - classification with neural networks

optional (advanced):

- docker containers

Though the general outline of the seminar is fixed, certain topics can be adapted to the demands of the projects and the wishes of the students.

Programming knowledge in Python is mandatory.

The aim of the course is to gain a critical understanding of machine learning and its application. The course focuses on the analysis of the classification of video streams and their classification.

Another central topic is cloud infrastructures and the so-called "edge computing" or "Internet of Things", which together with machine learning, form an almost all-encompassing set of tools for data collection that is beyond any (state) control. ''So keep in mind that, by using such technology without any layer of reflection and critique, you transport reductionistic behavioral ideas that are the reason for discrimination and the disadvantage of people that don't fall within the statistical norm of such machine learning systems.''

'''Content:'''

Every student will be provided with a NvidiaJetson Nano Developer Kit, from the university (as a rental). https://developer.nvidia.com/embedded/jetson-nano-developer-kit

You get a basic understanding of:

- Linux operating system
- Network structures
- Video processing (OpenCV and ffmpeg)

- machine learning (basic models)
- classification with neural networks

optional (advanced):

- docker containers

Though the general outline of the seminar is fixed, certain topics can be adapted to the demands of the projects and the wishes of the students.

Programming knowledge in Python is mandatory.

The aim of the course is to gain a critical understanding of machine learning and its application. The course focuses on the analysis of the classification of video streams and their classification.

Another central topic is cloud infrastructures and the so-called "edge computing" or "Internet of Things", which together with machine learning, form an almost all-encompassing set of tools for data collection that is beyond any (state) control. The course is therefore also suitable for those who are interested in a critical examination of "AI".

The dramaturgy follows a clear line and combines numerous abstract forms of visualization and programming.

AI on the Edge - Building a Machine Learning Cluster with Nvidia Jetson

The topic of AI is discussed in the media in terms of artificial consciousness, while the actual machine-learning applications have long been an integral part of the success of IT giants. To understand this technology it is essential to understand the principles of modern network architecture and its data structure and transmission. The course will take a practical approach to this topic and then lead into an informed discussion that will go beyond the opinions of "gift book philosophers".

The course gives an introduction to machine learning and its programming in Python using Nvidia Jetson Nano Computers set up as a Cloud-Cluster, that we set up in the seminar.

Every student will be provided with a NvidiaJetson Nano Developer Kit, from university (as a rental). https://developer.nvidia.com/embedded/jetson-nano-developer-kit

You get a basic understanding of:

- Linux operating system
- Network structures
- Video processing (OpenCV and ffmpeg)

- machine learning (basic models)
- classification with neural networks

optional (advanced):

- docker containers

Though the general outline of the seminar is fixed, certain topics can be adopted to the demands of the projects and wishes of the students.

Programming knowledge in Python is mandatory.

The aim of the course is to gain a critical understanding of machine learning and its application. The course focuses on the analysis of classification of video streams and their classification.

Another central topic is cloud infrastructures and the so-called "edge computing" or "Internet of Things", which together with machine learning, form an almost all-encompassing set of tools for data collection that is beyond any (state) control. The course is therefore also suitable for those who are interested in a critical examination of "AI".

The project refers to the rise of pop-cultural references in digital media in the early 2000s, but instead of the tedious processes of that time, improvisation and recombination are part of the artistic expression.

AI on the Edge - Building a Machine Learning Cluster

The aim of the course is to gain a critical understanding of machine learning and its application. The course focuses on the analysis of classification of video streams and their classification. Another central topic is cloud infrastructures and the so-called "edge computing" or "Internet of Things", which together with machine learning, form an almost all-encompassing set of tools for data collection that is beyond any (state) control. The course is therefore also suitable for those who are interested in a critical examination of "AI". The course gives an introduction to machine learning and its programming in Python using Nvidia Jetson Nano Computers, that we set up in the seminar. Programming knowledge in Python is mandatory.
