Inventory & Display II: Mnemosyne – The picture atlas from Warburg to Google

Mnemosyne was the greek mythological figure synonym with memory,
Many contemporary artists such as Christian Boltanski, Emily Jacir and Walid Raad work with picture archives as part of a practice concerned with memory or commemoration. In the Fachmodule, students will research, create and exhibit their own picture atlas as a result of a comprehensive investigation into the origin and history of images and strategies and effects of real existing and virtual classification systems. We will review Aby Warburgs famous “Mnemosyne” atlas (1924-1929) in length as well as related works by contemporary artists. Short excerpts of seminal theory about (visual) concepts of memory from Platon to Derrida will as well be discussed in the process.

Ein wesentlicher Teil unseres kulturellen Gedächtnisses wird durch Bilder geprägt. Ob es sich dabei um die großen Themen kollektiven Gedenkens handelt, oder um individuelle, persönliche Erinnerungen, stets greifen wir auf einen großen Fundus überlieferter Bilder zurück. Gegenüber Texten bewahren sie sich eine größere interpretatorische Offenheit und unterlaufen die Beschränkungen bzw. Präfigurationen sprachlich-wissenschaftlicher Einordnungen. Aby Warburg hat ab 1924 mit dem Bilderatlas „Mnemosyne“ einen herausragenden Versuch unternommen, Kulturgeschichte nicht einfach als Bildergeschichte zu beschreiben, sondern durch Arrangements von Bildern bestimmte Zusammenhänge „ersichtlich“ zu machen. Denn (Re-)Konstruktion von bildlichen Erinnerungen ist selbst ein bildnerischer Prozess: nicht nur die Auswahl, sondern auch die Anordnung von Bildern schafft Bedeutung. Künstler haben immer wieder auf unterschiedlichste Bildarchive zurückgegriffen und alternative Interpretationen der Geschichte geschaffen. In der Vergangenheit stand die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Systematik der Wissenschaften im Vordergrund. Heute bieten die Algorithmen digitaler Bildarchive wie die Google Bildersuche oder Apples iPhoto neuen Anlass für eine Beschäftigung mit automatisierten Identifikations- und Klassifikationsprozessen, z.B. Gesichtserkennung und Geotagging.

Kursinhalte
Im Kurs werden wir uns intensiv mit der Entstehung und Bedeutung von Aby Warburgs Bilderatlas „Mnemosyne“ auseinandersetzen.
Weiterhin werden wir mit Strategien und der Ästhetik der Erinnerungs- und Gedächtniskultur im Werk verschiedener Künstlerinnen und Künstler beschäftigen (Kurzreferate!), z.B. bei Marina Abramovic, Emily Jacir, Christian Boltanski, Chris Marker, Annette Messager, Walid Raad / The Atlas Group, Anselm Kiefer, Ilya und Emilia Kabakov, Gerhard Richter, Sarkis uva. Begleitend und vertiefend werden wir kurze(!) Ausschnitte aus maßgeblichen Texten zur Mnemosyne/Mnemotechnik diskutieren; diese Diskussionen finden als sog. „Meditationen“ als performative, nicht-wissenschaftliche Dialoge statt. Exkursionen ins Bildarchiv des Bundesarchivs in Koblenz und in die Fotothek der Künstlerin Anke Heelemann sind ebenfalls Bestanteil des Kursangebots.
Im Zentrum steht die Befähigung zur kritischen künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Herkunft und dem „Nachleben“ von Bildern, der Erzeugung bzw. Veränderung von Authentizität und Aussagen durch die unterschiedliche Zusammenstellungen von Bildern und der Gestaltung verschiedener Repräsentationsformen.

===Vermittlungsziel / Kompetenzen===

Kursziel ist die Zusammenstellung eines eigenen Bilderatlas! Erwartet wird die engagierte Recherche nach Bildern aller Art -- dazu zählen auch und gerade Motive aus privaten, alltäglichen oder scheinbar trivialen Sammlungen. Die Produktion von fiktionalen Dokumenten („Fakes“) kann ebenfalls Teil dieser Strategie sein. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Entwicklung einer individuellen Systematik, die sich nicht zwingend durch Wissenschaftlichkeit aber durch intellektuellen Scharfsinn auszeichnen soll (Humor inbegriffen). Die Wahl des Mediums ist frei, der Atlas kann sowohl als Tafelwerk/Buch wie auch als Wand- oder Vitrineninstallation realisiert werden, elektronische Formate sind ebenfalls möglich. Format und Umfang werden individuell abgesprochen, der Atlas sollte jedoch mehrere Zusammenstellungen enthalten. Der Kurs mündet in eine öffentliche Präsentation zum mediengang, deren Planung und Realisation ebenfalls Bestandteil des Leistungsnachweis ist.

We cherish our kitchen! Furniture, tools and ingredients are part of a meticulously arranged ensemble representing the attitude and abilities of the chefs de maison. The kitchen is not only vital to ensure nourishment -- it is also a laboratory for socially establishing an aesthetic practice. For example, the Bauhaus movement wanted to rid the kitchen of its unhealthy and ineffective disorder -- and turned it into a techno-social environment that shaped the identity of the modern wife on par with male industrial workers. Today, the kitchen is still at the heart of private households and other communities. Cooking has become a public phenomenon -- witnessed by a millionfold TV audience, performed by artists at galleries and on the streets. A world-wide exchange of recipes and ingredients by emigrants and travelers has advanced the spirit of multicultural lifestyle more than any other cultural product. The kitchen has become a challenge to artists, designers architects and engineers. While some are obsessed to evolve it into heavily computerized high-tech facility, others are more concerned with investigating its anthropological nature as a personal and collective inventories.

Curriculum:
This project will feature a fundamental examination of the kitchen space, cooking and food as implemented in contemporary art. We will research, design and eventually construct modules of a working kitchen for the department of Media, Trend & Public Appearance. To us, designing a kitchen means leaving no gap between installation art and everyday life.
Participants will design a series of performative public kitchen events that place the kitchen at the heart of Moden's strategy of social practice.

Goals:
Students will be led to investigate the kitchen as part of a larger context of social and economic traditions, shifts and transitions. They will be able to relate to and place the kitchen in contemporary conceptual art practice.

In der Küche finden sich Mobiliar, Werkzeuge und Zutaten sorgfältig zu einem Ensemble geordnet und geben so Auskunft über das Können und die professionelle Einstellung der Köchinnen und Köche. So ist die Küche nicht nur lebensnotwendiges Mittel zum Zweck der Ernährung, sondern auch ein Labor für die praktische und gemeinschaftliche Erprobung einer ästhetischen Praxis. Die Bauhaus-Bewegung schrieb sich z.B. die Abschaffung unhygienischer, unordentlicher und ineffektiver Verhältnisse auf die Fahnen – heraus kam eine umfassende Reform, die die Küche in eine techno-soziale Umgebung transformierte, mit der die Idee der modernen Hausfrau als Pendant zum Industriearbeiter einherging. Bis heute ist die Küche das architektonische und soziale Herz eines Haushalts und anderen Lebens- und Arbeitsgemeinschaften. Kochen ist zum öffentlichen Schauspiel geworden, dass Millionen von Fernsehzuschauern verfolgen und KünstlerInnen kochen in Galerien und im öffentlichen Raum.
Die weltweite erfolgreiche Verbreitung von Kochrezepten und Zutaten durch Migranten hat den Geist multikulturellen Zusammenlebens mehr als jede andere Kulturtechnik befördert. Die Küche stellt Herausforderungen an Gestalter, Künstler, Architekten und Ingenieure. Während einige von der Idee besessen sind, die Küche in eine Hochtechnologiezone zu verwandeln, steht für viele die anthropologische Qualität der Küche als persönliche und kollektive Inventare im Vordergrund.

Im Projekt findet eine grundlegende Erforschung der Konzepte Küchenraum, Kochen und Essen als Bestandteile der Conceptual Art statt. Wir werden Module für eine noch zu schaffende Küche an der Professur recherchieren, entwerfen und schließlich umsetzen (lassen). Für uns bedeutet diese Arbeit, keinen Unterschied zwischen einer künstlerischen Installation und dem alltäglichen Leben zu machen.
Die TeilnehmerInnen werden weiterhin mit der Planung, Gestaltung und Realisation eines öffentlichen Koch-Ereignisses am Ende des Semesters betraut – von der visuellen Gestaltung, der Menükonzeption bis hin zur Zubereitung.

Die Studierenden werden befähigt, die Küche in einen größeren Kontext sozialer, wirtschaftlicher und technologischer Traditionen, Entwicklungen und Veränderungen einzuordnen. Sie können die Küche anschließend als Format innerhalb der zeitgenössischen Konzeptkunst bestimmen und weiterentwickeln.

Vom 29. April bis Juni 2012 zeigen Christine Hill, Studierende, Alumni und Mitarbeiter im Neuen Museum Weimar die Ausstellung THIS IS WHAT WE MEAN WHEN WE SAY… Im Werkmodul soll ein Katalog zur Ausstellung entworfen und umgesetzt werden. Der Katalog soll als eigenständige & anspruchsvolle künstlerische Publikation -- d.h. als experimentelle Enzyklopädie -- die Forschungspraxis, Prozesse, Arbeiten und das materielle und geistige Inventar der Professur dokumentieren.

===Vermittlungsziel / Kompetenzen===

Vermittlung von theoretischen und praktischen Fähigkeiten der Buchgestaltung: Layout, Typography, Farben/Farbräume, Einbettung von Bildern usw. Weiterhin werden Druck- und Bindetechniken und Papiere vorgestellt und zur Anwendung gebracht. Die redaktionelle Bearbeitung gehört in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Christine Hill und Felix Sattler ebenfalls zu den Kursinhalten.

Curriculum:
This project will feature a fundamental examination of the kitchen space, cooking and food as implemented in contemporary art. We will research, design and eventually construct modules of a working kitchen for the department of Media, Trend & Public Appearance. To us, designing a kitchen means leaving no gap between installation art and everyday life.
Furthermore, course participants will co-construct – from visual and event planning, to menu selection to actual cooking – a public meal, to be presented at closure of semester.

Goals:
Students will be led to be able to investigate and identify key kitchen design elements and their role in aesthetically establishing a social practice. Technology, skills and tools for the design and building of kitchen furniture/tools with be evaluated and put to practice.

Assessment:
Assessment: Active participation in plenums, (20% of final mark, ≥3x absence is considered a failed class); paper presentation (10%), design, realization and presentation and documentation of a work either alone or as part of a group (70% of final mark).

Der Alltag der Kleingärtner spielt sich meist hinter verschlossenen Türen ab. Den Blick nach drinnen zu ermöglichen haben Chrsitiane Schlütter und Katharina Knobel versucht zu ermöglichen.
In dem Projekt "Grüne 8" wurde daher die 70-jährige Geschichte des Kleingartens 8.Mai aufgearbeitet. Hierbei sollte die Alltagskultur im Vordergrund stehen. In der Ausstellung wurden lang vergessene Objekte aus den Gärten thematisch arrangiert. Fotografien boten den persönlichen Einblick jenseits der Hecke. Mit Hilfe von Zeitzeugenberichten – in der Geschichtswissenschaft nennt man das „Oral History“ – wurde der Wandel in der Gartenkultur erfasst. Diese Berichte wurden mit Naturklängen gemischt und zu einer hörbaren Wanderung durch die Jahrzehnte verwoben.

DokuMedia ist eine multimediale Dokumentation der Grenztänzer in Kooperation mit den Fakultäten Medien und Gestaltung der Bauhaus Universität Weimar.
Unter der Betreuung von Prof. Ben Sassen des Lehrstuhls für experimentelle Television und der Dipl. Mediendesignerin und Medienpädagogin Sandra Naumann entwickeln die Studierenden gemeinsam mit 18 Schülern ein multimediales Ausstellungskonzept, während der Proben der Grenztänzer.

Die Website www.grenztaenzer.de entsteht ebenfalls in Teamarbeit von den Studenten und Schülern im Rahmen der DokuMedia. Die Seite wird mit dem Projekt wachsen und als Onlinetagebuch hinter die Kulissen der Grenztänzer blicken und den Projektverlauf dokumentieren.

In der Weimarer Marienstraße eröffnet die Poststelle der besonderen Art mit persönlicher Kundenbetreuung. Die Poststelle versteht sich als Schreibwerkstatt, Ideenstube, Wortfindungsort und Typografiewunderland. Bei uns finden Sie den roten Faden für ihre Briefe. Wir bieten Ihnen verschiedene Schreibsets mit denen Sie sich an unseren funktional gestalteten Arbeitsplätzen der kreativen Briefgestaltung widmen können.

Was macht einen Shop aus? Wo fängt performative Arbeit an und hört Dienstleistung auf? In wie fern beeinflusst ein Shop uns als Kunden und wie können wir diesen Effekt als Verkäufer nutzen?

Diese Fragen und noch mehr stellten wir uns im Zusammenhang mit dem Projekt "Counter Culture". Nach unserem Ausflug in die große Stadt der Träume, Berlin, und nach den zahlreichen Besuchen besonderer Geschäfte, wurde uns schnell klar, dass wir uns mit unserem Shop eine Nische suchen müssten. Egal, ob es sich hierbei um einen Lakritzladen oder um ein Schubladen handeln würde. Das Konzept ist simpel aber überzeugend. Konzentriert man sich auf ein bestimmtes Klientel und spezialisiert man sich auf bestimmte Produkte, sticht man unter den doch immer größer werdenden Multisellern hervor. Natürlich bevorzugen die meisten Menschen diese eierlegenden Woll-Milch-Säue, jedoch finden auch viele wieder zu dem Tante-Emma-Laden um die Ecke zurück und besinnen sich auf den guten Service und Rat der VerkäuferInnen hinter den Theken. Der individuelle Service der den Kunden als Individuum und nicht als Massenkäufer behandelt gehört mit zum Konzept. Der Rücklauf zu kleinen Läden hat einen weiteren großen Vorteil: Wo das große Kaufhaus vielleicht nur zwei Sorten Lakritze anbieten kann, hat das Geschäft das spezialisiert ist auf Lakritze alle nur erdenkliche Arten von Lakritze vorrätig. Vom Dauerbrenner, wie den Lakritzstangen bis hin zum besonderen Lakritzbrot.
