These Relations Are Forever uses the thematic thread of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) to weave a speculative story of ritual and healing, where scientific and policy outcomes are intertwined with artistic processes. It will bring together the knowledge of four researchers from the Joint Research Centre (JRC), whose work sits at different stations along a flow of chemicals; from agriculture via law and policy through bodies and into water. The four researchers are presented as Wise Women, holders of knowledge and protectors of life; their scientific practices are reframed as relations of care and ritual becomes a vehicle to make connections across bodies, scales, cycles and scientific disciplines. This work will address fertility, community and (more-than-human) health, telling stories that explore the power of positive imaginaries, offering a way of ‘staying with our troubles’ whilst envisioning alternative ways of being in the world.

In collaboration with Caterina Cacciatori, Sandra Coecke, Irene Guerrero Fernandez and Saskia Vermeylen four rituals will be developed that make space to acknowledge our entanglement with chemicals, to celebrate the healing and restorative capacities of bodies and ecosystems and to give space to and thanks for these processes.

The map is not the territory it represents, but, if correct, it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness. — Alfred Korzybski, Science and Sanity, p. 58.

Maps and territories contrast two manifestations of space: there are inner mental maps that are subject to the logic of our brain and the functioning of neurons. And there is a territory outside. It shows causalities with which we live and act unquestioned and validate with formulas.
Possibility spaces are a rather new promise. The term comes from mathematics and describes all states of a system, which in our case is described by sensor data and spatial coordinates. The humanities have assigned great power and vision to these spaces: described by Foucault as utopias, virtual spaces are now places of rich life under entirely new conditions.
The project deals with questions of craftsmanship in working with space with the help of sensors as well as with the technological history and constitution of space. In the end, our corporality is and remains the central point of orientation and the measure of reference.
It will also be examined how philosophical questions, which in the end ask how utopias become visions and how these can be brought into a non-violent relation and strategy to and in the present.

The project expects the participants to conceive and elaborate a self-defined work, but also offers numerous literature and excursions on the topic.

Part of the project is a field trip to Schieferpark /Thüringen as an intensive working retreat in early June (5.6. until 9.6.).
The specialized modules of the professorship are recommended for technical assistance.

----

SENSORS AND SENSING
water sensor
https://lastminuteengineers.com/water-level-sensor-arduino-tutorial/

The water sensor is used to detect the presence of water and is typically used to monitor water levels, detect the presence of water or leaks in spaces that need to be kept dry or detect rain fall.
The water sensor is essentially a variable resistor that has more or less resistance depending on the amount of water it comes in contact with.
It works very well at detecting the presence of water but the jump to the maximum range very quickly when more than a few drops of water are applied.

To connect the Arduino, water sensor and three LED's to indicate the amount of water present I followed the circuit diagram and code here:
https://create.arduino.cc/projecthub/123lYT/simple-water-level-sensor-with-led-ebf3f7

In this example the sensor is being used as a rain indicator, so three states were defined: Dry Weather, Average rain and Heavy rain. Depending on the level of water present one of three LED lights would turn on and a corresponding message would be printed in the Arduino console.
Learning Ritual

I have committed to creating one ritual or action per week from now for the duration of the semester. I begin the practice of ritual making from an inexperienced and inhibited place. Making rituals and talking about spirituality makes me uncomfortable, but this is also exciting. I feel clumsy and out of place and so somehow that means this is the right path. To begin this journey I am learning from Jane Batten and reading her book Power From Within: A feminist guide to ritual-making. She gives step be step instructions for crafting your own rituals including how to plan and structure a ritual, examples for each stage of the ritual and tips around specific ceremonies.
Batten also touches on my thinking around ritual - the fears and the reasons to pursue a ritual practice. She talks about the general disapproval to terms like 'ritual', 'spirituality' and 'witch', the feeling that ritual is not real and is more a personal indulgence and the fear that ritual might actually unleash a power within us, all of which touch on the resistance I feel to inhabiting a more spiritual way of being. However she notes "it is no use working to change structures if we do not also change ourselves, a key point that resonates with my reasons for beginning this process. I also identified with her critique of white New Zealander's as "living in a spiritually bereft culture" calling for us to not appropriate the spirituality of the Maori people but to "address our own spiritual needs, evolving a sense of ritual that is relevant for ourselves, right here and now". This is the departure point for this project.

10.12.2022
Daphnia as living sensor

Daphnia otherwise known as water fleas are used in water quality testing, to detect contamination with hazardous compounds. The DaphniaToximeter II is in use in water testing facilities around Germany.
Daphnia are used a biological sensor, as a living sensor within a machine, however we could also monitor the health of naturally occuring Daphnia in bodies of water to gauge the health of a river or lake.
I will develop a ritual to establish a connection with Daphnia here in the Ilm and perhaps to begin a practice of care, by checking in on them.

Deep Listening Practice

Deep Listening is a process and a tool to aid in conscious listening. Developed by musician Pauline Oliveros this is a practice to expand our perception of sounds out into the environments around us, out into the 'space/time continuum of sound' and through this expansion to be connected with the environment.
Deep listening practice consists of energy work, body work, breathe exercises, vocalising, listening and dream work. Working from the book Deep Listening: a composers sound practice by Oliveros I am exploring Deep Listening as a technique to develop connection with rivers.
This is is also linking with work I am doing around soundscapes and recording the sounds of the river as a way of listening- with, being-with and making-with the river.

RITUAL AS SENSOR; RITUAL AS CARE

I feel disconnected to nature.
I understand that I and my recent ancestors have never had a flowing connection with the spirits of the land. This project is a personal exploration of methodologies to find ways of countering that disconnection and form new relations with Land close to me, in this case the river Ilm in Weimar.

Through a series of rituals, sensing experiments and forms of storytelling I seek to challenge myself towards a more spiritual and reciprocal connection with the river, to find ways to deeply engage with the land around my highly urbanised lifestyle. Acknowledging that colonialism, white privilege, dominant scientific practice and capitalism have shaped my worldview and my relationships with more-than-human worlds I choose to stretch my imagination towards possible futures of co-evolution: to imagine how a close relationship with a body of water might look. What a spiritual connection to water might entail, resemble, or signify. What can I offer a river to form a mutually beneficial relationship?

A ritual can simply be a set of protocols, not unlike a scientific experiment, that allow us to give space for gratitude, restoration and acknowledging stakeholders (relations) in all their forms. Ritual is a technology that allows us to slow down, make ‘good relations’ (Liboiron, Pollution is Capitalism) with the communities (bodies and environments) closest to us and bring new imaginaries into being. Following Michelle Murphy’s concept of Alterlife this project uses ritual to make “words, protocols, and methods that might honour the inseparability of bodies and land".
In this project I use ritual to clearly mark out a time and space to challenge the accelerating pace of our techno capitalist world, to be in the moment with my body and to navigate new ways of being-with nature.
Ritual becomes a vehicle to make connections across bodies, scales, cycles, offering a way of ‘staying with our troubles’ (Haraway) whilst envisioning alternative ways of being in the world.
This is not an easy process for me. Addressing spirituality brings up uncomfortable feelings of being a fraud, an imposter, the fear of embarrassment and the fact that all my education does not acknowledge spiritual and ritual practice (including song, movement and crafts) as legitimate knowledge. I fear a collision with the knowledge structures of 'dominant science' that I have been brought up with, so it is a struggle but it is liberating to explore other ways of being in the world.

METHODOLOGY
RITUALS
I will develop and enact one ritual or action per week. The rituals will use different approaches inspired by deep listening, feminist ritual practice, body work, practices of more-than-human care, meditation, performance/body art. The process is working towards finding modes of connection that speak to me, make me feel.

*Ritual as practice of care
*Through ritual and storytelling bring into being new possibilities.
*Digital storytelling tools: VR, audio. This side of the project has been explored in the Fachmodul Immersive Essays and takes the form of a ritual experience in VR.

*Ritual for sensing, to extend the senses
*Ritual as practice of care
*Ritual to slow down
*Ritual to listen

STORYTELLING
*Explore future narratives, how might ritual change the relationship between the Ilm and I when practiced across generations?
*Through ritual and storytelling bring into being new possibilities.
*Digital storytelling tools: VR, audio. This side of the project has been explored in the Fachmodul Immersive Essays and takes the form of a ritual experience in VR

The process and outcomes of this research have been collected in this wiki and in the form of a book. The book contains; the outline for each Ritual 1 - 8 including the aims and instructions, a personal reflection on each ritual after its completion and photo documentation. It also includes the beginnings of speculative stories and assemblages created by the river.
water sensor
https://lastminuteengineers.com/water-level-sensor-arduino-tutorial/

SENSORS AND SENSING

1.12.2022
water sensor
https://lastminuteengineers.com/water-level-sensor-arduino-tutorial/

SENSORS AND SENSING
https://lastminuteengineers.com/water-level-sensor-arduino-tutorial/

I feel disconnected to nature.
I understand that I have never had or somehow lost a flowing connection with the spirits of the land.
This project is a personal exploration of methodologies to find ways of countering that disconnection and form new relations with the Land I find around me, in this case the river Ilm in Weimar.

RITUALS
I will develop and enact one ritual or action per week. The rituals will use different approaches inspired by deep listening, feminist ritual practice, body work, practices of more-than-human care, meditation, performance/body art. The process is working towards finding modes of connection that speak to me, make me feel.
The process is working towards finding modes of connection that speak to me, make me feel.

*Ritual for sensing, to extend the senses
*Ritual as practice of care
*Ritual to slow down
*Ritual to listen

STORYTELLING
*Digital storytelling tools: VR, AI, audio
*Explore future narratives, how might ritual change the relationship between the Ilm and I when practiced across generations?
*Through ritual and storytelling bring into being new possibilities.
