There's immediacy in film and video. We watch content and it registers in our mind as some kind of organized structure. We may not be able to interpret it one way or another but the image is received.
I'm interested in disfluency. When things don't quite add up. It really starts with language and my problem with it. It’s more that we’re conditioned by language and shifting from the common cultural mode of communicating is difficult since most of us have been brought up in a society that favors the external language mode instead of self-contained interior being with your sensations.
In Butoh you are just going deeper. It’s anarchy. You’re just letting things go through you. Most dance and theater is almost always on a word like level. I’m going to become anger—now express it. In Butoh you have the ability to become something without acting it but embodying it in someway.

In general, most people are compelled to find meaning in things classified as performance or art. Our bodies are complex entities and for some reason we neglect our senses. “What does it mean?” I’ve heard in the background from viewers of dance performances, art exhibitions, etc. Spending time watching documentation of performances by the Butoh troupe, Sankai Juku, I realize it defies description—verbal language. As I watch the dancers shift in to and out of and through space, it’s as if my brain is just operating in the mode of image thought and sensory thought, not language thought at all. Zen masters often say that you can’t talk about certain experiences, it’s not ineffable its just too intimate, internal to be restated in anyway.
In regards to transcontinental collaboration--creating true affective experiences can be achieved if that's the goal of the collaborators.
It makes me think that space is embodied. To hear a sound that doesn't seem to fit the location would trigger memory--the process of remembering a familiar sound, seeing an image of that sound. It may turn into an affective memory if we give it time. We trace the sound to a place from our past and perhaps relive that memory or experience the moment a little bit deeper.

I'm a 3rd yr MFA in Visual Arts---I will have my thesis show in December 2013

I am really obsessed with interior spaces of architecture—the stuff you don’t pay much attention to. To give an example, the interiors of storage spaces like a boiler room. I’m enthralled especially when I find clumps of dust, mold, or calcium build-up. It is possible to see time in these things—the structures become more than static buildings—one can begin to recognize them as living entities.

The spaces and sets I construct often draw from my interest in "hidden spaces"

In most of my performances I perform blind. I wear a mask. I’ve used masks as a tool to become focused to point of absorption in any moment. I find that I have a lot in common with the early exponents of Butoh in the way that I explore gesture. Ushio Amagatsu, choreographer, dancer and designer of the 1970s Japanese born troupe Sankai Juku, hits me the hardest! Amagatsu’s work is one of the most powerful moments I have experienced. He doesn’t operate in language. I’m just mesmerized—in the moment.

Here are some examples of my work - [http://ucsdopenstudios.com/2013/artists/jamilah-abdul-sabur/]

'''Proposed Idea for this Class:'''

I'm really looking forward to collaborate incorporating the use of biophysical sensors that capture the low-frequency acoustic vibrations produced by the bodies of performers.

''First meeting:'' 15.04.2013

==Description==
The sensation of space through spatialized sound may be influenced by sources that differ in their quality and quantity. Within this project, we will investigate ways to modify, expand or augment how space can be experienced through sound. The outcome may be, for instance, an electroacoustic composition, a simulation of spatial perception, sonic architecture or a set-design as a virtual or performative environment.

This project is the beginning of a long-term cooperation between the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of California in San Diego. Partners in Weimar are Prof. Robin Minard and Ludger Hennig from the Studio for Electroacoustic Music (SeaM) and Max Neupert (Medial Environments). Partners in San Diego are Prof. Miller Puckette (Computer Music), Prof. Katharina Rosenberger (Music) and Prof. Shahrokh Yadegari (Theatre and Dance). Telematic classes will allow students from both faculties to work together. Classes will take place in Weimar in the evening, mid-morning in San Diego. The cooperation is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

===German description===
