“The first step is an intuition and it comes with a burst, then difficulties arise – this thing gives out and then that - 'Bugs' - as such little faults and difficulties are called – show themselves, and months of intense watching, study and labor are requisite....” T.A.
Philosophy
The term „Bug“ was already used in the 19th century for little faults in mechanical/electrical components. Later crackling noises on the phone were perceived as little animals, nibbling on the line. Computer pioneer Grace Hopper possibly used the word first for errors related to computers, as she publized the story, how a moth in a relay caused a malfunction of the computer Mark II, on 9th of september 1947. The moth was removed and taped to the journal, next to the entry „First actual case of bug being found“.

Today, bugs are omnipresent, considering humankind and technology. For software and hardware, total absence of errors is neither possible nor provable. Even expensive, manifold tested programs contain errors inevitably. So soft- and hardware, and even humans are at best considered stable or robust, when occurring errors are seldom and/or their aftereffects are rather harmless.

In our work „Bugs scored“, the metaphorical, technological bug meets its natural equivalent.

Basic Idea
We have a box filled with beetles here, and we want to do some tracking stuff with them to generate useful musical data.
All sounds and structure should be derived from these beetles, an interaction between spaces (Weimar - SanDiego) and technical „bugs“ (like delay, dropouts, feedback etc).

If we had a second trackable population on your side we could do a lot of interesting stuff, by exchanging/combining/mixing data for realtime-composition etc. But of course, this could be a little hard considering the time that is left for this semester.

Furthermore it would be somewhat exciting to derive pitch (and time) data from the beetles here and send it in realtime to SanDiego, for musicians to play it on instruments, which would then be sent back to Weimar for modulation etc. Mixed with the orginal/modulated beetle-sounds there are many possibilities.

Because we´re also not sure, if the part with the instruments is managable for now, we´re thinking about it in a more general way. What the actual project will be, depends on who will colaborate and what the implied possibilities are. So the result could be something like an audio-sculpture (a self-organizing sound system), a realtime-composition/improvisation (maybe with instrumentalists), or something in between. But we´re open and interested in your thoughts on what could be done with this setting.

Setting
So far, we have a box filled with beetles. There are several microphones and cameras built into it , so we have multiple audio-signals to playback/process/analyze and derive control-data from, and video-streams, which provide us with position/movement-data and thereby much more. In addition we have an Arduino for further sensoring and experimentation. Pd is our tool of choice.

Ives:

LINE
Line is a free voice calling application for smart phones. Besides the trickiness of setting up an account the quality of the application is very impressive. It has not found much popularity in the United States or much of Europe but is very popular in countries like Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Spain, and Switzerland among some others. The emojis and game attachments seem to be the draw among its users. The user has very little control over the settings of the application because it was meant for smart phone calling. The addition of PC/Mac devices is simply convenience because the accessibility does not improve much.

USERNAME
Ives and I first had trouble just getting in contract with each other because of the fact that Ives does not have a smart phone and you can not sign up from your computer only. He had to download an emulator and download the app and set up an account from his computer. A mobile phone number is needed to create an account which then requires authorization. Even after that, the profile that you have now created can not be seen by others until you make a username that people can search for which we did not figure out for quite some time.

Sound Control
The control that the user is given through line is actually non-existent. We believe that is because the application is based on its smart phone use where the control of levels during a voice call is just volume control. The user can not even select input or output settings or control the volume of the incoming call. All of this had be done through the computer settings. The configurations of input and output that we needed to do our testing proved to be a bit of a challenge because of these restrictions.

Sound Quality
Both of us were very impressed with the quality and latency of the call. Neither of us had a hard time hearing each other or experienced drop off through volume changes or latency. We found that the latency of the application was varying between 50-80 ms which we thought was pretty accurate considering the quality we were hearing. Our first attempt at measuring the latency was accomplished by looping the tone Ives was sending to me back to him through a hard patch from the line in to headphone jacks on my laptop. Considering my (Bo's) basic skills of sound design, once I downloaded SoundFlower we were able to patch the sound in a much cleaner, more efficient way. Since in our set up the sound was being sent from Germany to San Diego and then back to Germany where Ives used his own pd patch to read the latency, we had to split the time in half because of the round trip it was making.

Exploration
We were unsuccessful in our ways to use this software creatively because of our limited time working together and our feeling the quality of the call was good enough that any attempt at playing sound together would sync successfully instead of finding distinct sounds created through its short comings. The lack of user manipulation really left us with a clean and steady video call that would actually be useful in sharing clean sounds from one person to another in another country.

Description
The sensation of space through spatialized sound may be influenced by sources that differ in their quality and quantity. Within this project, we will investigate ways to modify, expand or augment how space can be experienced through sound. The outcome may be, for instance, an electroacoustic composition, a simulation of spatial perception, sonic architecture or a set-design as a virtual or performative environment.

This project is the beginning of a long-term cooperation between the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of California in San Diego. Partners in Weimar are Prof. Robin Minard and Ludger Hennig from the Studio for Electroacoustic Music (SeaM) and Max Neupert (Medial Environments). Partners in San Diego are Prof. Miller Puckette (Computer Music), Prof. Katharina Rosenberger (Music) and Prof. Shahrokh Yadegari (Theatre and Dance). Telematic classes will allow students from both faculties to work together. Classes will take place in Weimar in the evening, mid-morning in San Diego. The cooperation is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

„reacTIVision“ recognizes the played cards and sends the information to Pd, were it is checked, if the turn is possible or not. According to this check, a graphical interpretation and some sounds are produced.

Ives: /* The answer? */

I started this project with this simple question:
Where are silent places?
The moment you arrive in a city you've never been before, tons of information about how and where to find the places you should be (to spend your money), are fighting for your attention. Probably it will never be any real problem to find the next best food opportunity or hardware store for example, or maybe even cultural places like museum or different kinds of venues. But where, and there is my question again, where are the silent places? I'm not talking about parks or green spaces in general, because most of the time they're full of people making noise, just as on the streets and public places. Don´t get me wrong, I like being outside, I like people. Sometimes I only would like to know, where you can go to find some peace and rest without too much distraction.

I live in Erfurt now, for about one year, and if I would know these silent places I probably wouldn't have to ask about. I only would mark their locations on the map, and i would be done here. But because of this lack of knowledge I decided to change the initial question, or better to answer it in a different way.

The answer?
If I could get to know the average volume of several places in this town, I would simultaneously isolate the low level areas. Following this thought, I picked some example positions, where I recorded one minute of the noise in the morning, the early afternoon an evening over 3 days. So I got 9 audio files for every position, from which I calculated the average. Unfortunately I don't have a standardized measurement microphone, so I had to assign the results to numbers on a relative scale from 1 to 9, where 1 equals about -68dB and 9 about -20dB, according to the sensitivity of my mic (Zoom H4).

As a point of reference I took some recordings in the garden of my parent's house, which is situated in a village with only 200 inhabitants. As expected, with -58,3dB it's real quiet there, compared to Erfurt. It's a solid 2 on my relative scale.
I added the gained information to openstreetmap.org with the tag „noise“ and the relative volume level. Sure it will be deleted soon for inaccuracy, but however, I think the idea isn't that bad.
These places are only examples or a kind of starting point for further studies. If one would continue to examine volumes like that (better with standardized equipment), a noise map could be made up, giving a growing overview about our sound environment and of course, the silent places.

The other places I chose, and their noise levels are:

Klein Venedig (small park region)
:-53,39dB : scaled 3
Krämerbrücke (historical bridge)
:-50,40dB : scaled 4
Schlüterstraße 3a (in front of my flat)
:-48,81dB : scaled 4
Fischmarkt (smaller public place)
:-48,52dB : scaled 4
Domplatz (large cathedral square)
:-43,97dB : scaled 5
Anger (the central public place)
:-42,19dB : scaled 5
Stauffenbergallee (main road)
:-37,09dB : scaled 6
Juri-Gagarin-Ring (main road)
:-35,64dB : scaled 6
Talknoten (crossing of the two)
:-33,58dB : scaled 7

I added the gained information to the openstreetmap with the tag „noise“ and the relative volume level. Sure it will be deleted soon for inaccuracy, but however, I think the idea isn't that bad.

The other places I chose, and their noise levels are:

Klein Venedig (small park region)
:-53,39dB : scaled 3
Krämerbrücke (historical bridge)
:-50,40dB : scaled 4
Schlüterstraße 3a (in front of my flat)
:-48,81dB : scaled 4
Fischmarkt (smaller public place)
:-48,52dB : scaled 4
Domplatz (large cathedral square)
:-43,97dB : scaled 5
Anger (the central public place)
:-42,19dB : scaled 5
Stauffenbergallee (main road)
:-37,09dB : scaled 6
Juri-Gagarin-Ring (main road)
:-35,64dB : scaled 6
Talknoten (crossing of the two)
:-33,58dB : scaled 7

I added the gained information to the openstreetmap with the tag „noise“ and the relative volume level. Sure it will be deleted soon for inaccuracy, but however, I think the idea isn't that bad.

These places are only examples or a kind of starting point for further studies. If one would continue to examine volumes like that (better with standardized equipment), a noise map could be made up, giving a growing overview about our sound environment and of course, the silent places.
