“Okay, this world is getting weirder and weirder and I’m hearing simulation theory almost everywhere” (someone on reddit.com)

“The simulation hypothesis or simulation theory proposes that all of reality, including the Earth and the universe, is in fact an artificial simulation, most likely a computer simulation. Some versions rely on the development of a simulated reality, a proposed technology that would seem realistic enough to convince its inhabitants the simulation was real. The hypothesis has been a central plot device of many science fiction stories and films.” (Wikipedia on simulation hypothesis)

Nick Bostrom predicts in his book “Are you living in a computer simulation?” from 2003 that through enormous amounts of computing power that will be available in the future, later generations might run detailed simulations of their forebears or of people like their forebears.

With this information in mind, let’s turn it around and ask ourselves how a simulation of the far away future would look like. Since the world seems to get weirder and weirder how weird can it get? In the course we will create situations that can be experienced with VR-glasses or presented on video screens.

The course emphasises on artistic and opposing ways of working with Virtual Reality. Its aim is to establish individual approaches to VR, an increasingly widespread medium which offers artists new possibilities for expression and intercultural communication.

The practical part will be an Introduction to the game engine Unity 3D, an introduction to working with HTC Vive VR-glasses, the Oculus GO VR-glasses, as well as introductions to photogrammetry, immersive sound and 360 video, body interaction through tracking, 3D modeling and animation.

We will also look into contemporary and digital art related to recent socio-political and media-philosophical topics. We will create an artistic discourse on the topic of VR which will be presented in the form of individual projects at the end of the semester.

After thinking for a while in this project i found myself in the dilemma of how should I proceed to narrate something different. I think "the Weird" part of this project was the conception of translating a poem into a VR Experience with glimpses of videoessay aesthetics, as there is no such Weird stuff in the visuals itself.

The whole experience was interesting, as i started interpreting and giving shape to the words of the poem into a VR environment.

The poem "Entflohn die holden Träume ..." (1862) is Written by German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and its mainly style is romantic existencialism.

== Are we sluts? ==

I have always been an advocate to speaking for women’s rights, and I wanted to choose a subject which moved me to create a whole project out of it. In this world filled with women oppression, what could be my little contribution

-Slut shaming
-Space privacy invasion / cat calling
-Rape jokes
-Rape/assault culture

Even though I have many things to say about all those subjects, I wanted to focus of the slut shaming topic, as it is becoming more and more popular thanks to social media and the easy access to the entertainment world.

What is sexual freedom? Do women get to ever experience this freedom? If a man wants to go out and have sex with a stranger, he is recognized as an alpha male and praised; but if a woman does the exact same thing, what is thought of her? It has been hard for us women to explore, experiment and be safe at the same time, mostly because we live in a society that praises men for having sex and slut shame women for doing the same thing.

Whore, slut, bitch, and others are used nowadays freely to referring to women everywhere in the world. Either they have had sex or not, slut shaming is a way to call women for whatever action they have done in their lives or the society. Slut-shaming is the practice of criticizing people, especially women and girls, who are perceived to violate expectations of behavior and appearance regarding issues related to sexuality. Slut shaming as an insult has become more and more popular now a days thanks to social media. But even before that, these terms were used to denigrate women and insult them for whatever reason you can possibly think of. What disturbs me the most is that these terms are not only used by men referring to women, but to women against each other. I have found it baffling the fact that TV, movies and music have found a way to make slut shaming and name calling a way of referring to women, and make it seem as something normal.

Theme: Female slut shaming.

Ideal: To confront “slut shamers” on TV and movies, with female counterparts who are shutting down stereotypes, and owning their own sexuality.

Everyday, we watch on movies and TV how the free female sexuality is called offensive names, and even put up for slut shaming those women who are owners of their sexuality. We are taught that is it okay to judge a woman by the quantity of men she has slept with, and that we are allowed to call her offensive names if the doesn’t follow the “social conduct” of women being stuck with just one man, and having sex with her husband only.

Once I had my topic chosen, I wanted to make a video installation, using as a guide to Candice Britz, as I have been following her work for a while now. I enjoy the fact that she uses everyday multimedia products and gives them a new meaning with her own techniques of appropriation. She has been known to work with Hollywood stars and Hollywood material to express her thoughts on society and what is wrong with it. I wanted to give it a try playing around with the original footage I used.

For my project, I wanted to focus on the harm that these names do to women, and how used we are getting to be called like that. How easily it has been to have these names heard on TV and movies, and the fact that new generations are seeing this behavior like a regular thing to do. I wanted to focus on phrases and words said on TV shows that denigrate women. First, I wanted to focus on the fact that men are the ones who call women bad names, but in the middle of my investigation, after hours stuck to my Netflix account, I was hit with the savage truth that women are mostly slut shamed by other women. I wanted to show that men are the ones that still oppress and categorize women, but it was harder for me to find men using these words, and easier to find women themselves calling each other with these awful names.

Sex, Women and TV: 21 Shows That Changed the Way We See Female Desire

After hours of research, I made a list of TV and movies material where the characters show and empower woman secure of her sexuality, in contrast to those who shamed her. After that, I decided to focus only in those dialogs that questioned female behavior and judged her for being who she is. I concluded that men are not as slut shamed as women are, then I asked myself: what would happen if I had men say the same phrases female characters say? How would they react? How would their faces be? So, I subtracted audios from popular TV shows and movies and asked some friends to say them out loud to the camera.

What I found out that even though their expressions weren’t 100% committed (they are not actors), it made them a little concern the fact that all their lines where told by women to women. They were uncomfortable with some phrases and made them very self-aware. In my first montage video, I experimented with color correction because I wanted to show extra feelings and message through color.

But in the process, I realized that the words had to be strong enough to send their own message. Also, with the montage I wanted to emphasize the annoyance of the words, and the impact they can have in the viewer when they heard those words in such a continuous order. At the end, I focused more in Candice Breitz’ montage stile, and let the words and image speak for themselves.

The final piece was a four-way video projected in the wall of the classroom by a video beam.

It was a bit of a harsh reality to notice that us women can get to be our own enemy. We are a huge force of strength, capable of amazing abilities that men can’t do. When I first started working on this subject, and thinking of what I wanted to criticize, I was convinced that men were the main responsible ones of the oppression of women, but I came to the sad reality that women are sabotaging the way of our own sisters. Of course, throughout history, the female figure has always had a submissive role under the male counterpart, I cannot deny that. But us women have become in an intern allied to bully other women and judge them according to male’s point of view of what women should be. The day we stop calling each other bad names, judging the other’s decision, and start building a sisterhood instead of enemy’s zones, we will move forward in our own society, and we could start facing the patriarchy’s real oppression. Us women must stick together in order to fight all of our unbalanced issues in this men-controlled society. We must start questioning TV and movies and the message they are sending to people of all ages (especially younger ones) and start dealing with the consequences these names are having in so many young women around the world.

It Really gave me the idea to simplify things a little, keeping the aesthetics and Technion I want, Yesterday after consultation I wondered about what I spoke with Prof.Brinkmann, as part of our conversation we ended up concluding people nowadays tend to refugee in the Internet, when they are happy, when they are sad, or upset, even when they're horny and there's no one around (or maybe yes), but basically always. And that my approach was to show what the Internet may bring, good and bad things.

I wanted to project the lightning directly from the projector on my poor volunteers for the installation, the images were a mix between weird mixes like chainsaws sounds linked with ideal landscape images, or porn sounds linked to sacred images, and that kind of montage between extremely different image/sound nature to make a point clear about dichotomy. Then Depeche's came out and, Blew my mind. I don't want to project anymore on peoples face, the reaction would be partially the same between all of the participants, a shrink of eyelids.... and then, project over, the printer issue comes out being too expensive and not very eco-friendly. And i do really want to modify the meaning and the intention of any image, word, video or anything that I came up using.

For the moment its my idea to project over a glass shaped world so anyone can feel The world in their eyes according to how they're feeling, keeping that kind of dichotomy about all what you can find online depending on your mood... but now as there will be no ''recorded reactions'' there will also be no phase two, and for what i would like this project to be esthetically, this is a Must. Think a long night of After Effects, images, plug ins, and Console will follow.

After dealing with a monumental creative crisis and trying during hours to come up with something that might actually work as I had intended in mind, I opened After effects, and I felt like a clueless man in front of a white sheet of paper, I mean, I have been in touch with the software for years, and I knew I wanted to transform actual images into something more than the downloaded image, but at that point I didn’t know where to begin.

So there I was, trying to come up with something. Maybe some 3d Waves?

Then I started to realize I wanted to videomap it on an actual spinning globe, for all the “world in my eyes” thing, which until the moment I sustain. But how could I make something aesthetically nice, transforming the image with some kind of procedure, but still getting to know the viewer what I’m doing, and which is the original image? Or at least what does the original image represents?
I had to think quite more. I mean, the easiest way was to just project an image, on the spinning globe, but that was, I felt, a little mediocre for the idea I conceived with videocomposition and making it visually attractive for me. I think I’ve always pushed myself to my own limits. Then I was again surfing the net, finding about code (I haven’t touched code since high school). But then I though it was a little too much, so I went basics again.

I started with a grid of particles moving as a wave, linked to an image which gave me an xyz dispersion as the hexadecimal pixels of the image were read one by one. That looked nice, but again the same problem, the intension was going to be so disperse, if I were to work with logos, the animation would be steady as the colors are flat, and still the image or the intension would be literally lost in translation during the process, ending up in a very interesting aesthetic but meaningless-to-the-audience wave of particles.
Then I was in the urge to think how to be aesthetic without distorting so much the image so it could still be readable to the audience while projected on an irregular spinning surface as this:

After several attempts, I was very frustrated, so I went out for a bike ride. One thought led to another, suddenly I was remembering Plato and his scheme of the universe, worlds within worlds… Then I decided I wanted to use the mapping to project different things into the globe, creating different worlds as different things could be projected in the spinning surface.
The next morning I woke up with the intention of at least discovering what or how I was going to distort the images, keeping them readable to the audience, but still making them look aesthetical as I wanted. So again I was thinking of universes… and I came up with the idea to create a 3D Particle Universe of the images, rendering them in 3D sphere particles.

I started working again, creating the model of the particle I was to use, rendering and importing it, into

Then about 5 hours of work, things finally started to look the way I wanted, with the aesthetics I wanted, but also easy to read and identify to the audience.

Now as a conclusion, I know how to develop a distortion method which adapt the aesthetics I want. The concept has variated through the process, when I started I wanted to show emotions, but now I think I find more interesting showing the world as a representation of iconic images, lastly the world as we know it is a representation and has developed a collective database of images and icons which given a moral value have defined us as a society. The project now is a little bit iconoclastic, but that is how it has evolved until now.
