The urban development kit
In the course of the project, several methods will be created and formulated to design cities a new and in a better manner. The proposals should be designed in the form of sets - either as games, products, model kits or instructions - that will be made accessible to an interested audience.
The scope of activities is here rather wide: tools and apparatus to raise awareness can be developed, strategies for meeting/happenings or performances could be organized, exhibitions and installations in public spaces could take place. Speculative, ephemeral and revolutionary designs and projects should deploy themselves in concrete, innovative and unseen (city-) situations.
1. Coursework 10% - assignment in written form: research to a chosen topic/to the developed project in the fields of art history, urbanistics, media theory or another discipline, whereas a work/topic should be chosen individually as a reference that stands exemplary to an activity.
2. Coursework 10 % - assignment in spoken form: oral presentation on a topic chosen individually that stays in relationship to the developed practical proposal
3. Active participation in the project colloquium
4. Course work 60 % - presentation of a work
The urban development kit
4. Course work 60 % - presentation of a work
The project directs itself to MA students.
4. Course work 60 % - presentation of a work
==Beschreibung==

==Description==
In the past decades, the use and reappropriation of archival strategies and archival material has been a strong component of contemporary art practices. The artist has been adopting several roles, such as the historian, the archivist, the story-teller, in order to re-examine this material and its medial representation and translate it into new forms. Starting-point of the course will be the examination of archival strategies (including the visits to archives on site, the examination of the archive versus the collection), to further on appropriate and deconstruct the methods and/or the material and reflect on a more general level on the organisation of things and their possible reafirmation or self-organisation.
==Beschreibung==

==Description==
This practical course will approach the organisation and display of (art)works in a space, questioning and defining exhibition formats as well as reflecting on the documentation of the works within and beyond the exhibition space. Meant for students willing to experiment with the format of the exhibition, this practical course will look at exhibition designs and histories, to then focus on individual exhibition proposals and their execution on the scale of models, ground floor, sketches, textes and experiments in space.
==Beschreibung==

==Description==
Diagrams (as well as lists, tables and individual modes of mapping) are tools that can serve the development of a project while supporting different processes. Through their use psychological terms can represent or convey dance techniques, such as the exchange step in foxtrot. They take into account and depict related aspects, different speeds of historical processes, circular movements, repetitions, and hidden relationships. The use of diagrams, maps and curves can provide not only existing conditions, but also scrutinize and identify their own limitations. On concrete and pragmatic ways, they enable a wealth of situations in order to play and promote unexpected ways of thinking and presenting. Seen as an instrument to reduce complex issues, they can help to depict a variety of what-ifs. On the one hand diagrams can be helpful on the way to a work, on the other hand, they can also form the work itself. The aesthetic potential of diagrams is hidden not only in their sensual and abstract construction, but also in the materiality and physical presence of the diagrammatic.
''First meeting:'' 2012-10-22

==Beschreibung==

==Description==
==Description==
''In situations, abstract ideas, such as plans, laws, rules or values, become concrete, experienceable and existential. In a situation, the general becomes concrete and thereby important for me being in the situation. Simulated situations may therefore allow us to investigate questions such as: What is it like to ...? How does it feel to ...? What would it mean if ...?'' Björn Franke

In the 1960s, NASA conducted a series of experiments that could be described of pre- enactmetns of the future. After Kennedy had set the goal of going to the moon by the end of the decade, they needed to find out whether man could live away from our natural habitat. Elaborate devices were built to simulate different aspects of the space that was still unreachable, such as the reduced gravity of the lunar environment. Much data was collected, but reading the papers that resulted it almost seems that the scientists were almost as interested in what the future felt like for the test subjects.
Today we are in a similar situation with a range of different global issues. What was essentially the cold war in then 1960s now is global warming, technological acceleration and a variety of scenarios from pandemics to the crash of the global financial markets.
In this project we are first asking you to make palpable a future of your choosing which can either be desired, possible or unexpected. Next you will identify a key aspect of this future which must relate to the human body such as movement, senses, its dimensions and so on. Finally and most importantly you will design a device or experience that can be used to feel the indicated future.
==Description==

==Working Title==
Works by Eleana Katanu, Stephanie Massarelli, Adriana Muñoz Origel, Bojana Ristic.

Through mind-mapping, printed matters, notebooks, and installation, Katanu, Massarelli, Oirgel and Ristic offer an exploration of processes of artistic production based on tools of observation and strategies of translation. Based on a series of field trips to Berlin, 'working title' represents the initial impressions obtained during three weeks of visiting more about 25 different producers, including artists, editors, distributors, curators and others.

Taking the role of the collector, the culmination of this research is a visual representation of both individual and group experiences in which production is inspired by production. A complex set of cultural, personal and financial questions which are simultaneously apparent and hidden are intertwining in the physical manifestation of the research.

==Strangely Familiar==
An installation from Golriz Behgoo (Iran) and Bethan Hughes (UK), Strangely Familiar explores the unique combinations and conflicts that arise from cultural representation and inevitable amalgamation.
Using the outmoded technologies and formats of Television and slide projections, the installation presents an edited selection of the artists› own collection of pop-cultural material (photographs, videos, texts, music and adverts) regarding the years preceding and following 1979 in both Iran and the UK.
Through a combination of these materials, the work aims to examine the surreal phenomenon of witnessing one›s cultural background from a geographically and generationally removed position; an inward and outward view onto what is at once understandable, relatable and known but simultaneously incomprehensible, disassociated and unknown - that which is strangely familiar.

==Description==

==Working Title==

==Strangely Familiar==

Finally and most importantly you will design a device or experience that can be used to feel the indicated future.

==Working Title==

==Strangely Familiar==

Golriz Behgoo (Iran) and Bethan Hughes (UK) present an installation exploring the unique combinations and conflicts that arise from cultural (media) representation* and inevitable amalgamation.

Using the outmoded technologies and formats of Television and slide projections, the installation presents an edited selection of the artists' own collection of pop-cultural material (photographs, videos, texts, music and adverts) regarding the years preceding and following 1979 in both Iran and the UK.

Through a combination of these materials, the work aims to examine the surreal phenomenon of witnessing one's cultural background from a geographically and generationally removed position; an inward and outward view onto what is at once understandable, relatable and known but simultaneously incomprehensible, disassociated and unknown - that which is strangely familiar.

==Description==

Where is art generated? Where and how does production take place? What takes place between the studio and the space of diffusion, before and after the opening, between or without exhibitions? How do spaces of production define themselves – architectural, fictional, discursive, political?

On the basis of studio visits with producers from the fields of art, design and architecture, this project aims to define, redefine, construct or deconstruct the idea of artistic and design production.

The main part of the course consists of a series of field trips to cities in Germany, during which we will meet architects, artists, designers, curators, collectors, publishers and manufacturers in their working environment.

The project will be accompanied by the Fachmodul ‘Investigation and Translation’.
This course deals with practical and technical aspects of the project. We will explore and experiment with different media and methodologies. The aim is to find an appropriate format for the outcome of our investigation.
