Description:

How can we physically immerse ourselves in the non-human protagonists in our environment? How can we approach otherness and develop empathy, what tools do we need and what can we learn about ourselves in the process?

The seminar "Embodiment Toolkit" is an immersive experiment in which we ourselves become the test objects: we re-enact the role of the Other. The goals of our performative research process are a change of perspective and the exploration of new spaces of experience.

Our starting point are non-human beings, things and technologies from our everyday environment. We explore different speculative strategies to closely observe, describe and systematically analyze these role models. Ultimately, we translate our assumptions into simple guidelines for performative exercises and role plays, which we carry out and evaluate together in the group. We either only act within the limits of our own physiological capabilities or with the help of interactive tools from the world of DIY electronics.

Our weekly meetings mainly consist of performative experiments outside the seminar room; here we attempt to swap roles, and test, document and discuss our ideas and prototypes. On the other hand, we engage with related artistic and theoretical positions. We will get in touch with individual ideas and approaches, for example from the fields of systems theory, embodiment, media- and performance art. The course ultimately aims at the independent conception of interactive performative exercises, which will be carried out together with visitors during the upcoming Summaery exhibition.
This course is open to programming enthusiasts, system thinkers, data collectors and anyone who likes to move, observe, be outdoors and create something together. SCOBY, microorganism as the constructor

Concept : Investigating the possibilities of creating/designing molds for microorganism to construct and grow in different shapes and patterns, the first attempt, I was trying to create organic shape mold for Fommes Fomentarius, but failed miserably due to the condition of the mushroom. Then I tried to create Bacterial Cellulose and planned to paint with other microorganisms, though I have ethical concerns about the interactions that I could create among them. After that, I also questioned the same thing about how the SCOBY grows, following the width of the jar, if there are possibilities to create different shapes by changing the surface of the container?, The question is still remained unanswered.
[[File:Dania González Sanabria. Cabinet , images 2.jpg|alt=The migrant's Cabinet: This is a work in process composed of several components: There is a world map globe, whose sphere has been replaced by a transparent acrylic one. Inside it I have grown slime mold. On a linen flag hanging from a flagpole embedded in the wall, approximately 2 meters high, I am sewing with golden thread words that I extract from testimonies that I am collecting from Cuban migrants, printed on papers. These testimonies answer questions such as: When, how and where did you emigrate? by what route, route or routes? Why did you emigrate? What were you looking for? What were you escaping from? What are you still looking for? I attach the pieces of paper with the testimonies to the linen in a branched manner, as if tracing map routes or webs of the slime mold itself. There will also be three hemispheres, similar to the larger globe, with maps delicately engraved or printed on this transparent material. Inside, I will plant the slime mold samples in the place where Cuba is drawn on the map, feeding those organisms in the zones where other places are drawn (places in the world where the Cuban diaspora settles), creating the slime mold to "migrate" inside these small maps, emulating the Cuban migratory routes. Statement: The construction of this piece takes the testimonies, anecdotes and statements of Cuban migrants as guides to plant living organisms, and trace tissues, using the molds as a metaphorical image of migrant communities. I intend to redraw the traces of displacements, ramifications and disintegrations configured by the Cuban migrant collectivity through expeditions detonated by necessity, hostilities and utopias, representing social, political, ethical and sentimental networks, interconnected in the same way microorganisms grow.|thumb|The migrant's Cabinet.
The steadily growing population and the associated need for more building and manufacturing activities pose almost insurmountable challenges for architecture and the industry as a whole. The need for more sustainable alternatives pushed research towards possibly grown materials, e.g. materials composed of agro/forestry leftovers processed by microbes. Fungal composites is just one of many example, and could therefore offer a promising alternatives to resource intense construction and fabrication materials.

These fungal composites can be produced in the near future in a way that is both climate-friendly and cost-effective. In addition, they can be easily separated, fully composted and used as fertilizer after the end of their life, thus closing the loop and making of them a "circular material". Thus, the use of fungi could create a lightweight and fully circular building system.

In this course we will use artistic approaches to design with Fungi, understand their way of growing on natural matter, explore how they relate to other easily cultivable living beings, and create own art-work out of this experience.

In the end the artistic pieces will be exhibited at the Winterwerkschau.
The project module introduces into media that moderate the living and the digital. We look into environments in their diverse natures, and how various actors live in them, network and relate to each other. The aim is to develop interfaces, methods and practices that enable such communication between different actors. The project addresses both questions of craftsmanship in the use of sensors as well as the performative use of media as an enactment of a writing of history and culture of technologies. In the end, our physicality is and remains the central point of orientation and the measure of reference and evaluation. Subjectivity - experienced as artistic expression - remains an essential measure for artefacts in the making. But addressing the subjectivity of the other person also means taking their interests into account and planning for them.

On this basis we want to thematize ideological questions that arise from the narratives of performance with media and how these can be brought into a non-violent relation and strategy to and in the present.

The project expects participants to conceive and elaborate a self-defined work, but also offers numerous literature and digressions on the topic.

Students are expected to be able and willing to work in a self-organized manner and to actively engage in the discourses of the module.

A prerequisite is prior enrollment in a specialized module with the co-workers of GMU or the Interface Design Professorship.

An accompanying course of the modules of the professorship is recommended.
