When you’re a stranger in a new country, you seek to be welcomed in this new surrounding you entered. Sadly, that’s not always the case when people make it their art to send you a clear message that you’re not welcome in "their" land.

Early explorations on the topic

What is racism?
A renaissance painting overlayed with a question found on Reddit and a sentence that caught my attention in one of the answers.
A voiceover defining the word Racism according to Wikipedia and read using the "Bad News" voice.

'''DESCRIPTION'''<br>
Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them.
The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts (literary, visual, musical and performing arts).
In the visual arts, to appropriate means to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects of human-made visual culture. A notable example are the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp.

But when is appropriation a homage, when is it art and when is it just plain plagiarism? And what are the effects of technology on this ongoing appropriation? Now that boundaries of authenticity and originality are even more blurred, artists (indeed anyone) can recycle and re-upload images, text and audio material more quickly and easily than ever before. Sampling, remixing and mashups proliferate online, and allow people to even adopt a social media profile that appropriates or parodies a well-known persona.

In this course we will look at contemporary artistic strategies of appropriation. We will discuss artforms like Post-Internet art that embraces meme-culture, or music styles like Vapourwave that appropriates 1980s and 1990s styles of mood music.

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create artistic works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.
We live in weird times, where Internet memes could start a Third World War, where the Internet offers the hope of transcultural communication and at the same time creates an uncontrollable chaos of shitstorms and cyberbullying that makes it seem like we are
thrown ‘back into the future’ of the digital Middle Ages.

How do we define authenticity and sincerity in times of fake news and post-truth politics? When laptops and smartphones become an important part of self-fulfillment and identity, when everybody can be a ‘news’ reporter, who can you believe to be sincere?

This course asks the recurring, ever haunting question of what is authentic. Has the search for it always been a deceptive road? How real does authenticity need to be today?

When you're in a neutral position towards a person, it's easy to tell whether or not his spoken words are of value. But the case is different if you're a follower of a figure that is of a high position in a country, then one might not think twice about the words coming out of that figure's mouth and you would be an automatic believer.

Would these spoken words carry the same value and weight when they're no longer attached to that person?

In an approach to examine this; I created a new character who has no value nor weight attached to him.
I called my new character Fahim Fahmi Abu El Mafhumia; his name reflects a know-it-all kind of person. Fahim Fahmi is in his early 60s, spends most of his time at a local coffee shop, always carrying a newspaper with him and likes to start debates with the other people at the coffee shop.

Pictures of Fahim Fahmi are posted on social media along with words that were originally spoken by famous Egyptian figures, from people of political power, TV anchors, etc. However, in these posts, it's never mentioned that what Fahim is saying was originally said by someone else. I leave it to the viewer to examine these sentences and how much sense they do make at the end. With the 2018 presidential elections approaching I decided to narrow my choice of quotes and went with ones spoken by the current Egyptian President.

To stress more about the lack of meaning behind the quotes, a balloon was added; words of no value are just air in a balloon that gets popped.

Part of a conversation I had with my father when I shared one of the pictures of Fahim Fahmi with him. He told me that one of the sentences seems like something the Brotherhood party would say; their actions are always opposed to benefiting the country. I didn't mention to my father that this sentence was actually said by El Sisi, the current president of Egypt who my father supports.
I called my new character Fahim Fahmi Abu El Mafhumia; his name reflects a know-it-all kind of person along. Fahim is in his late early 60s, spends most of his time at a local coffee shop, always carrying a newspaper with him and likes to start debates with the other goers to the coffee shop.

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create performative works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

Lecturer: [https://www.uni-weimar.de/kunst-und-gestaltung/wiki/Jörg_Brinkmann Jörg Brinkmann]<br>
Credits: 6 ECTS, 4 SWS<br>
Date: Thursdays 17:00-20:30<br>
Venue: Performance Platform, Digital Bauhaus Lab (Room 001)<br>
First meeting: Thursday, October 12th 2017, 17:00<br>

<br style="clear: both">

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create performative works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent,
self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.

'''CRITERIA FOR PASSING'''<br>
In order to successfully participate you will have to develop and document your own project that can be in the form of a performance, video work or installation for example. Also, regularly attend to the sessions and participation is mandatory.

'''LANGUAGE'''<br>
The course will be in English, unless all participants are speaking German.
